“Yes, you can say it. I am amazing.”

I laugh against his neck, and his answering laugh rumbles through my chest. I rock my hips against him, feeling his hardness. He moans. “Your turn,” I say with a growl, grasping his shoulders and digging my nails into the fabric. His eyes widen and he keeps them on me, his fingers still pressing against my hips.

Back and forth, I move, spurred on by his hands. He throws his head back, and it’s not long before he cries out. I grin at how powerful I feel by bringing him so much satisfaction.

Raúl sees my grin and quirks an eyebrow up. I smile at him. His hair is disheveled, a satisfied look in his eye. His fingers are slack on my hips, as if he is drained of energy.

“Yes,” I say, mimicking him. “You can say it. I’m amazing.”

He reaches up, cradling my face in his hands. “That you are. Now, if you’ll excuse me for a quick second, I need to change my pants.”

He looks slightly embarrassed, and I laugh, urging him to go. He doesn’t take long, and when he sits back down on the couch, I immediately sit on his lap again. Unsure, I ask, “Do you need me to move to the sofa?”

“Why in the realm would you do that?” He hands me the cake, taking one for himself. I scoot back enough to give us room but don’t leave his lap.

We eat in silence for a few minutes before I spontaneously lean forward and kiss him on the cheek. A warm feeling spreads through my chest when I sit back and smile at Raúl. He grins back at me. “Here, taste this. I think you’ll like it.”

I take a bite and roll my eyes upward. Chef Louis is seriously a genius. “This is delicious. What is it?”

“Cheesecake with raspberries.”

“You have all the interesting food,” I say as he feeds me another spoonful.

“We believe in enjoying our existence.”

I grin and begin to respond when someone pounds on the door. I slide off of Raúl and we both head over to answer. Raúl’s there before I’m halfway across the room.

He flings open the door. Henry stands there, panic in his eyes. “Sir, we have a situation.”

Chapter Forty-Four

“What kind of situation?” Raúl asks.

“We’ve finally found the rebels we’ve been tracking. They were spotted in the city by Ixtla.”

I raise my eyebrows, and reach out to clutch Raúl’s hand now that I am next to him. “Mother is in the desert. You don’t think she’s involved, do you?”

Raúl narrows his eyes and runs a hand through his hair. “I see, Henry.” Raúl turns to me and cups my cheek. “I have work to do, Penny. Will you be all right alone?”

With a genuine smile, I shove him out the door. If my mother is involved, he’ll find out. “Go, do your work. I am perfectly fine on my own.”

He sends me one last backward glance before rushing off with Henry.

“Nava, are you there?” I hadn’t noticed the spider’s presence, but I was otherwise occupied.

Yes. Nava emerges from underneath the sofa, climbing up my dress and into my palm. While we spiders have seen plenty of human interactions such as yours, I prefer to give you some alone time.

My face heats, but I ignore it. I bring her to my face, looking into her many eyes. “Do you know what’s going on with the vampires in the desert? And what is my mother up to?”

I do not know as of this moment, but if you give me some time, I will. I have lost contact with my cousin watching your mother.

My back stiffens. “Is your cousin okay?”

Yes. We will find him. Already, we are spreading the word. Once one of us is close to him, we can help him.

“How does that work, exactly?”

If a spider could roll her eyes, I swear Nava just did. We communicate as I am with you, from mind to mind. However, if we are too far away, it will not work. I cannot directly speak to him, but I can speak to my cousins close to me, who can speak close to them, and so on.
