“The underworld, dear. It’s where souls go when they die. The demon offered them strength and magic, enough to destroy the five queens, in exchange for their souls.”

“I have never heard a story go right that involves demon summoning,” says one vampire lady. I wonder how I can ask their names after this long without seeming rude.

Carmen laughs. “No. No, it never does. Rage and jealousy tainted the thoughts and blood of the mages, and they accepted the offer.”

She pauses for a bit, continuing her braid. By now, she is far from my head and I can see her face. It has a note of sadness in it, and I wonder if she knew the queens. Vampires supposedly can live very long, but I haven’t confirmed this with Raúl yet.

“Then what happened?” I ask.

“The five queens were meeting together at the capital. Everyone knew when it was. They didn’t try to hide it, because who would dare attack our beloved queens? They listened to everyone who came to speak to them. The fifteen mages, each wearing a robe of black, marched right up to the thrones.”

Carmen pauses, a faraway look in her eyes. “It was as if they were storm clouds themselves, casting a shadow on an otherwise beautiful day. The mages challenged the queens, and their combined powers were a sight to behold. They stood together, but the mages were too many, too powerful. Too far gone.

“The queens fell, one by one, until only one remained. She uttered a curse, a promise, that was heard all throughout the realm.”

“Oh, what did it say? Please tell us, I wasn’t alive yet,” says the vampire lady in emerald green.

Carmen smiles sadly and closes her eyes. “Of course I’ll tell you.”

Power and greed

Have turned your hearts black

Try as you might

Time won’t turn back

With our deaths

You have doomed them all

Our realm will crack

While rainbows fall.

Flowers

Wilt and turn to ash

Mountains

crumble and clouds will clash

Hunger

Strikes and buildings burn

Remember

Life is what you earn

“What are rainbows?” I ask.

“Ah, good question,” says Carmen. “They haven’t been seen since. Whenever it rained, light passed through the clouds in such a way that colors exploded out of them.” She sighs. “They were beautiful.”

The vampire ladies ooh and aah and I smile at their enthusiasm. They appear to love life so much.

“Flowers are a type of plant,” Carmen adds. “They’re like blooms on herbs, but were more for decoration than healing. In case you were wondering. I miss roses the most. It is said that someday, the five queens will return and claim their thrones, bringing peace to the land.”
