“Rescued by my Brother’s Best Friend?” I throw out the first book that pops into my head.

Penny rolls her eyes at me and bursts out laughing. I love it when her dimples crease. A slow smile spreads across my face as her laughter lightens my heart.

“It’s not Rescued by my Brother’s Best Friend,” she gasps amidst laughter. “It’s—”

“Would you go out with me on Sunday?” The words flow out of my mouth of their own accord.

Penny’s face freezes, and she glances at me with wide eyes. The question hangs in the air. She doesn’t respond right away, and I stay quiet, waiting until she’s ready to give me an answer. With every moment I wait, my heart beats faster.

Finally, Penny smiles and breathlessly responds with, “I’d love to go out with you on Sunday.”

Excitement relaxes my nerves, and my smile widens. We sit in silence for a moment as we glance at each other with shy smiles. A sense of peace overcomes me as the rightness of this settles in. I want to move in the direction that ends with the two of us spending the rest of our lives together.

“Where are we going?” She asks, breaking eye contact and unbuckling her seatbelt.

“I don’t know. I just asked you out.” I teasingly nudge her. “Can’t a man have a little time to think about where to go?”

“Ooh, a surprise, how fun.” The gleam in her eyes makes my heart race.

I laugh. “Be ready Sunday at noon; dress casual.”

“Well, that was a fast decision,” she teases, and then salutes me. “Yes, sir.”

A smile quirks my mouth, and I shake my head. I can’t take my eyes off her as I watch her get out of the car. Before walking away, she turns and leans into the window.

“Get home safe, okay?”

“I will. See you soon.” The smile on my face stretches from ear to ear.

She waves as she walks to the front porch.

My gaze follows her entire path as she climbs the steps. Before walking inside, she turns to me and smiles so brightly that I feel my insides begin to melt like wax. Then she waves a final time and closes the door behind her.

I feel a warmth in my chest. This feeling has been happening more frequently in Penny’s presence.

I realize I’m at a crossroads. One path leads to a life without Penny, and the other is one where I jump in and hold her tight.

I may not be worthy of her love, but the thought of another man getting her love and attention has me clenching my jaw and squeezing the steering wheel. I won’t let that happen. I will become a man worthy of her.

Penny is mine, always has been. I won’t lose her again.

As I pull away from the Miller’s, I grab my phone and call the one person who can help me.

“Liam,” Sean picks up on the first ring. “I’m on set and can’t talk for long. Everything okay?”

“Yes, but I need your help,” I rush.

“Shoot,” Sean replies.

“Evie mentioned that you might know some therapists I could talk to…” I falter, unsure of how to explain. The group therapy has been great, but I think I will need more one on one for this.

“Of course. I will call Kieran and see what he can come up with for you.” Sean hesitates for a moment. “Are you sure everything is okay?”

“I’m good.” I respond, a slight smile on my face. I haven’t felt this okay in a long time. “I’m really good.”

“Glad to hear it. I’ll get back to you tonight. Does that work?”

“Perfect. Thank you, brother.”
