“Oh,” I sigh, my disappointment obvious. My brother instantly picks up on my shift in mood. “What?” He asks. “You don’t like it?”

“I don’t want a job where I have to sit at a desk or work on a computer. I want to be active.” I say, approaching Bake My Day.

“Oh, like a physical job,” Sean muses.

“Yes. Like that. Does he have one?”

“I’ll have to talk to him again, and I’ll specify your preference and see what he has.”

“I’d love to work at a camp that teaches kids survival skills, how to survive if they’re lost, all that stuff.”

“I’ll check to see if he has something like that,” Sean laughs. “I’ll reach out to him soon and see what I can find out.”

“Thank you, bro.”

“Of course. Now get off the phone so I can call my fiancé,” he jokes. “Buy Tex an extra treat from me for taking such good care of you.”

I chuckle. “Goodbye, Sean.”

“Oh, and tell Evie I said hi. Talk to you later.”

I slip the phone into my pocket before crossing the road toward the bakery. My thoughts drift to Penny again, and I deliberately stomp them. A job will be good for me in so many ways. Being too busy to think about Penny will just be a bonus.

Chapter 8

Penny

It’s been a week since I left Andrew at the altar, and I’ve been unable to reach him. I know I’m the last person he wants to talk to, but I’m officially worried. My mom and sister, Stacy, are here checking in on me to make sure I’m okay. I’ve been talking to my mom about calling Betty West, Andrew’s mom.

“The last time I reached out to her, she didn’t want to talk to me at all,” my mom says, shaking her head. “I should probably give her a little more time before calling.”

“I think Penny is right, Mom,” Stacy says, taking a sip from her drink. “We should, at the very least, make sure he’s safe.” She pointedly glances at me when she says, “at the very least”.

My mom sighs and picks up her phone. “I’d understand if Betty hates me,” she says, dialing the number. “She was so upset the day of the wedding and wouldn't even look at me.”

She puts the phone to her ear, and we watch her waiting to see if someone answers. She shakes her head and hangs up.

“Try again,” I urge, and my mom gives me a look before redialing.

“Put it on speaker,” Stacy suggests. My mom rolls her eyes but does as she asks.

To our shock, Betty picks up on the first ring. “Hello.”

My mom’s eyes panic, and I gesture for her to say something.

“Hi, Betty,” she says sweetly. “How are you?”

Betty hesitates for a moment before responding in a cool and reluctant voice. “Fine.”

I feel tears burn the back of my eyes as I realize how many people I’ve hurt with my actions. Betty had become like a second mom to me.

“I was calling to ask if you’ve heard from Andrew,” my mom hesitates. “We haven’t.”

“Of course, you haven’t,” Betty answers coolly.

My mom clears her throat. “Have you heard from him?”

“The last time you asked, I told you I hadn’t.”
