“So, you and Mr. Tall, Dark and Handsome are hooking up?”

I scowl at my cousin over the top of the cash register. Thank God there are no customers in the store. “Hooking up? What are we, fifteen?”

“But you’re doing the nasty with him, right?”

I feel heat rise in my cheeks. “Yes, we’re together and doing…” I wrinkle my nose. “I’m not saying that.” Especially since nothing we did was remotely nasty. It felt amazing. The man is a sex god.

She crows, clapping her hands together. “I knew it! I absolutely knew you were hooking up with that piece of fine. He’s a good man.”

“How would you know?”

“Because, girl, I have a nose for sniffing out the good ones. How do you think I ended up with my Isaac?”

She makes a good point. Her husband is amazing. She also never liked Thomas from the moment she laid eyes on him. I should have trusted her judgment.

“So, tell me everything, Nee. And don’t you dare leave anything out.”

I tell her mostly everything. I leave out some of the more intimate details because she doesn’t need to know.

“Girl, he’s hot as hell for you. He paid for your security systems here and at the apartment? That’s a man who cares for you.”

“I know. I wish he would have let me pay for it.”

“It probably costs more than you earn in a month. These things aren’t cheap, Nee.”

She’s not wrong, but I don’t want to think about how much it did cost. “He is a good man,” I tell her.

“Uh-huh,” is her response. She gives me a look that says “duh”. She tosses her head a little. “Have you heard anything from the police about your break-ins?”

“No, neither have thrown up anything.”

“It’s definitely not your slimy ex?”

“The police spoke to him and he was cleared.”

“I hate the thought of you being here with this danger lingering.”

“Life goes on, Sim. I can’t stop working or shut the store down. I only just got it open.”

“I still don’t like it.”

Neither do I, but what else can I do?

“It’ll be okay. The police are on it.”

“Yeah, I trust them less than I trust the jackass who broke in in the first place.”

Maybe she’s right to be mistrustful. They don’t seem to be doing a lot.

“What about Thomas? Has he been by?”

I told her what happened, that he put his hands on me. She was livid, she still is. She wanted to go around to his place and smack him senseless. I convinced her not to do that, although it wasn’t easy.

“Not since Jared chased him off.”

“Maybe he’ll get the message that he’s not welcome here.”
