“Dakota. They need to unload it.”

I look at Jaxson. “No.”

“It’s not our business.”

But I shake my head. “It is. We have to save it. Jaxson…”

He just shakes his head and walks away. I run after him, then stop short when I overhear him talk to the guy I guess is the captain.

“…whatever the cost, I’ll make sure you’re paid. I’m a powerful man,” Jaxson says to him.

The man shakes his head. “They’ll kill my family.”

“Bring them with us.”

Both men look at me when I say that.

“I said bring them. My father will compensate you.” I look at Jaxson. “Won’t he?”

A muscle pulses in his jaw. “Yes. Get them. Now.”

When the captain disappears, I look around and swallow hard. “We’re alone.”

“You’ve added about half an hour to our time.” His eyes narrow at me, frustration tensing his jaw.

I step up to him and touch his arm. “We could…”

Trailing off, I take in his demeanor.

This isn’t the man who’s hot for me.

This isn’t the man I’ve been playing a soft submissive game with, my Daddy/Master.

This is a man made of stone.

“We could what, Dakota?” His voice is razor-sharp and slices my heart.

“F-finish what we started.”

“No, we can’t. Go shower. He said there are some regular clothes inside the cabin. Nothing designer to be seen, but clothes that cover you up. Fresh.”

The sting in his tone hurts worse than a hive full of wasps.

He moves away from me, heading to the other side of the boat. I take his arm, stopping him. “Jaxson?”

“Yes?”

“Did… did I do something wrong?”

“We were playing a game to keep you from a horrible fate. We don’t need to do that anymore.”

I’m lost. Confused. My experience isn’t vast, not with guys, because apart from the handful of boyfriends I’ve had, real, consuming romantic feelings have been few and far between.

Not that this is at all romantic.

But this whole thing, fake or not, is insanely intimate, and I have a whole lot less experience with that.

“Then why?—?”
