Deliberately. I’ll bet my life on it.

He collapses on me, his arm shifting to fall around my waist. He holds me close as he nuzzles my neck.

Then he eases out of me.

“Shower time and then?—”

“I’m staying.” I look up at him. “Please.”

“We’ll talk about it in the shower.”

But washing each other turns into kissing which then turns into him fucking me against the wall of the shower with my legs wrapped tight around his waist.

This isn’t Daddy or baby girl, it’s me and Orion. It’s nameless. And when he leaves me in there to finish my shower, I smile under the water, washing my hair.

If I think about it, the pain and shame come rushing back, but he seems to lessen it each time and… for me, it’s enough. I can see how lucky I am. I’m in one piece. They humiliated me, frightened me. But Orion rescued me.

If I hadn’t already fallen for him, that might do it.

But my smile, it’s got nothing to do with any of that.

For me, the smile is because of him. Having these moments together is something I’ll treasure.

When I’m with him, it’s us. Daddy and baby girl. Dakota and Orion. The princess and Jaxson. It doesn’t matter. This thing between us is fluid, and it makes the game real, heightening everything.

When I drag myself out and dry off, I walk into his room. Bare bones and perfect, I think. A reflection of him. I pull on a pair of his boxer briefs and a T-shirt. I drift through the room. Run my fingers over the bindings of the books by his bed. The dog tags in the wooden bowl on the dresser. I pick one up. There’s only a number and something that looks like an infinity symbol. Then there’s another one.

Jaxson Gardner.

“Jaxson,” I whisper. “Mr. Gardner.”

I put it on and then whip it off in case he sees me with it. At the other side of the dresser is a gun in pieces on a cloth and some kind of oil.

I want to know all about him, I?—

I stop.

Someone’s at the door. I can hear Orion and someone else. A guy… his friend, Malone.

What I should do is close the bedroom door, but instead I creep toward it and listen at the crack. I’m not sure what they’re talking about until my name comes up.

“Give me those, asshat.”

“Nice panties,” Malone says. “I’ll get you some lacy ones for your birthday.”

My face burns. I didn’t think…

Their voices drop and I can’t make out what they’re saying, then Malone says, “Because you’ll go and do something like kill him if I tell you. The kid’s the kid. It’s got nothing to do with you.”

“Bullshit.”

“Fuck, Orion. Got enough problems already, don’t you think? I’m here—on my fucking own steam—to point out that you need to make a decision. Her or who you work for.”

“I know that.”

“Do you?” Malone asks. My hands clench as my heart starts to lurch and beat hard. “It’s not a choice at all, Orion.”

“No,” Orion says grimly. “It’s not.”
