Fredrick

I speed down empty streets, the cool air whipping through my hair. I need to clear my head. Lila was never meant to be a fling, but that's all she sees us as. Just chemistry, attraction, sex. Nothing more. My mistake for thinking otherwise.

Parking in front of the club, I get out of my car. I hadn’t intended to come here, but this is where I ended up, so I’ll go with the flow for now.Inside, the bass pulses through every inch of me.

I sit at the bar, ignoring people dancing, and order a drink, not even bothering to check what it is. I just need something to numb the growing ache within me.

“Hey there, handsome.” Sarah’s voice is a purr, and her smile tells me she’s looking to rekindle something I’d long since forgotten about. She’s not Lila, and I’m not interested.

“Sorry, not tonight,” I say, downing my drink. She’s quick to refill my glass, a smile on her lips as she winks at me.

“Okay, let me know if you change your mind,” she says, leaning forward as she slides my drink toward me, offering a view down her shirt.

“Thanks,” I say. As I sit at the bar, my eyes wander to a couple dancing together. The way they move is almost hypnotic, their bodies pressed tightly against each other in an intoxicating rhythm.

I can’t help but think of Lila, her curves pressed against mine as we made love. But it was just sex, wasn’t it?

Sarah seems to be trying to get my attention with subtle gestures, but I’m not paying attention. My engagement to Lila might not be real, but I’m going to treat it like it is.

“Another?” she asks, pointing to my glass. “You look like you could use an ear.”

I nod, and she pours me another drink. I down it in one gulp, feeling the burn of the alcohol as it slides down my throat.

“Everything okay?” she asks, watching me closely, worry taking over the flirty look in her eyes.

“Never been better,” I lie.

Already tired of the conversation, I stand up to leave. Outside the club, I lean against the brick wall, breathing in the cool night air. Lila deserves someone who can give her everything she needs. I'm not that person.

But damn, do I want her. Every time she's near, all I can think about is touching her, tasting her skin.

“Fredrick?”

I turn to see Sarah watching me. “Let me drive you to your place,” she says.

I hand her my keys and we make our way to my car. Once inside, she turns to me. “Okay, what’s really going on?” she asks, turning the engine over.

“I fucked up.” There’s nothing else to say.

“Are you okay?” she asks.

I nod. “I will be, once I get over it.”

She pulls out of the parking lot, making her way toward the hotel she knows I’m staying at. The same hotel I always stay at. The same one I’ve taken her to in the past.

“Drinking won’t fix things,” she says, her knuckles white on the wheel.

I shrug. “But it’ll numb it all for a little while.”

She nods, still not looking convinced. “True, but it’s better to face things head on. You deserve good things, Fredrick.”

I laugh.

“I’m not joking,” she says, glancing sideways at me.

But her words are still funny. How did my life become such a mess?

Sarah stops at my door, pressing my keys into my palm. “I already called an Uber,” she says. “I’m here if you need someone to talk to, okay? No strings attached.”
