“I don’t know what happened just now, but I want you to know I meant everything I said.” He kisses my cheek. “Good night, Cammie.”

I shut the door behind him, falling against it with a thud. I give myself a minute to feel like shit, then I go check on my kids. Nothing was ever going to come of it. My kids are my priority. But I can’t shake the sense of betrayal and hurt.

It’s stupid. I don’t even know these men. Not really. But for some reason, I thought those men were different. That maybe they were trying to help me. I was wrong.

Alphas and omegas go together. Betas aren’t needed. All I could ever be to them is some fun. And I don’t have the luxury of fun. It was a fantasy, a dream of someone looking out for me. I can’t afford fantasies.

Despite my new locks, I spend the night tossing and turning between dreams of a beautiful green-eyed omega and his handsome alpha.

Chapter 6

Cammie

“You got more,” Margaret says, her amused tone alerting me that another table of firefighters has come into my section. That’s the third table this afternoon.

They’ve been at this all week, coming in droves to sit in my section. The burly alphas have been mum about why. But their tips have been very loud. And wouldn’t you know, the alpha mastermind I suspect is behind the whole thing has been suspiciously absent.

After I kicked Finn out Monday night, I thought that would be it. Instead, the following day, I found a basket on my porch filled with muffins and an application for Primrose. The day after that, I came home to a mowed lawn, a bouquet of wildflowers, and a gift card for the Mexican restaurant in town with a note that said, “Dinner on us tonight.” I don’t have any idea what to think of the whole thing.

“Table six. This time, it includes lover boy.” Margaret nods behind me, raising her penciled brow.

My body goes rigid. I fidget for a moment, pulling at my apron, my belly warm. Then I remember that this isn’t anything more than an attempt to get me in their bed. I spin and walk over to their table, determined not to be persuaded by the handsome alpha.

Table six is the big corner booth in the back. It’s currently occupied by six KPFD alphas. Reid is all I see, even among all that testosterone and objectively fine eye candy. He’s mouthwatering, sitting backward in a chair pulled up to the table, his strong back muscles tugging at the fabric of his shirt.

You can do this without throwing yourself at him.

Another step, and I’m hit with their scents. Reid’s homey smell stands above the others, rich and warm, cloaking me in feelings of safety.

Don’t be reckless. He’s the furthest thing from safe. He’s an alpha who already has an omega.

Reid turns to watch me over his shoulder, drinking me in as I approach. It’s a full body perusal that starts a forest fire of heat spreading through my body.

You want forever. You need a safe place for your kids, not a threesome with the hottest guys you’ve ever met.

“Well, hello, gentlemen. I can’t say I’m surprised to see you.” I tap my pen against my lips, teasing them and trying for light. “You sure do seem to love Cutter’s cooking.”

Reid’s lips tug up, and his smooth, deep Southern voice rolls through me. “Sweetheart, I’m not here for the food.”

Snickers and hushed hoots ring out from the table.

I cock my brow and look at him pointedly. “And I’m not on the menu.”

The table goes wild.

I ignore them, my eyes never leaving Reid’s. “But as long as that’s clear, feel free to tip all you like.” I turn to the men at the table. “Now, what can I get you, gentlemen?”

I take their orders and drop off their drinks before calling their ticket into Cutter through the kitchen window.

He nods in the direction of table six. “They bothering you?”

“Not really,” I say, shrugging.

“It’s Reid Camden? He the one cooking this up?” he asks.

“Seems to be. They haven’t said. They just order like usual and tip like rock stars.”

His stoic lips almost turn up into a grin. “He asked you out yet?”
