Then she nods and steps out of the door.

Ruby glances at me. “Lord, she’s scary. That scar.”

I sigh and my shoulders drop. “That scar is a sign of life for her. I wouldn’t judge her for it. She survived.”

Ruby hums under her breath and I sit down on the couch, feeling the couch shift next to me as Ruby sits beside me. “What do you want to do?”

“I’m not sure it matters if he doesn’t come back,” I say and the tears drip down my cheeks again. “I’m an idiot. I shouldn’t have let my fear scare me away from him. I don’t want to lose him.”

“Then you better make sure that he knows it when he comes back.” She hugs me tight and then stands up. “And he will be back. They all will be. Those guys are too tough to kill.”

I nod my head and give her a watery smile. “I hope so. Because if I was such a bitch that he left and then he dies…”. I can’t finish that thought.

Ruby sits back down and her arms go around my shoulders. “He will be back. And that alien would do anything for you. Even forgive you being a bitch. So don’t think like that.”

I chuckle but we both know that it’s not really funny.

I hurt him almost as much as he hurt me. I was his gift and I threw it all away, spit in his face, just because I couldn’t move past my old life.

Now I don’t care at all. I just want to see Koehn. I will never forget that life but I understand now. I can’t really live if I can’t live with him.

KOEHN

“There’s one on your zeta side, Varnak!” My ship shudders and I see the boom before I feel it, the blaze of fire in the veza side of my engines.

“You’re hit, Koehn!” Zaycor hollers.

“I can see that.” I frantically push buttons to put the dampeners where they need to be. “I’ve got it. I’m alright. Just help Varnak.”

We’ve been locked in this battle for the last two days. And every second that we haven’t been fighting, my heart has fought to keep any kind of hope. Any hope that she’ll change her mind. But I’m also expecting that none of them may be there when we get back.

A fact that I know will probably make Zaycor and Varnak happy. Ruby and Alex really seem to have made them angry enough to wish them gone.

Varnak shouts out a war cry and chases after one of the pirates in a fighter ship. They must have been collecting these for awhile. There are more than usual for sure.

At the same time, Zaycor and another fighter named Ren chase after another couple, cornering them on the other side of a satellite that’s become space junk.

The two of them blast the fighters and they explode in a ball of light that knocks Zaycor’s ship back and into the satellite.

This fight has been dirtier and harder than any we’ve ever had and ordinarily I’d be celebrating just like my men.

But I don’t have the same joy for it that I usually do.

“Koehn! Wake the hell up! You’ve got one on your veza side. He’s about to get off a granthing shot!”

I whip my ship around and fire a scatter of shots at him, smiling when his ship explodes in a ball of fiery fury.

“See, that’s why we’re here, Commander! Get them! Preferably before they shoot you!” Varnak grumbles.

I growl under my breath and get my head in the game, searching the screen for another ship. The sensors come on for the proximity and I switch the screen to see one of them on my tail again.

“Granthing pirates!” I growl and spin quickly, gunning my ship and firing at the same time so that he’s firing at a ghost.

“Yeah!” I punch the air as his ship explodes too.

“That’s it, Commander! Let’s get these granthing pirates!” Every ship separates and we search each sector individually until we’ve found every one of them and fired them into the farthest reaches of the galaxy where their ships shall meet the gods and their fate.
