You don’t get between an Arkadian fighter and his mate. Not if you want to live.

Of course, my little mate has no idea what is going on and how much of a stir she’s caused. She turns and smiles when some female in a chained dress that bares all of her body except for her face which is covered by thicker chains.

Lacey cocks her head at me when she walks away.

“She’s a slave of the auction house. Probably one that provides sex on command to anyone who wishes to see under those chains.”

Her tiny nose crinkles again. I snort with laughter, taking a quick sip of my drink to cover the sound. “Yeah. I didn’t figure you’d be thrilled by that. She has no other option. She either does that or she goes on the auction block and who knows where she ends up. She owes the management some kind of debt and they are taking it off of her hide.”

Her eyes turn sad and I sigh. “I know. It’s not the best situation. But we can’t save everybody, my kora. We’ll get this information and then get home. I’ll complain to the council about it but I doubt if they do anything for her. She didn’t have any marks on her and they will consider it a debt owed. They most likely won’t interfere.”

Lacey turns away and I sigh, looking around the room. I’m not telling her that I’ve used the services of females like her before although the ones I had sex with were willing females. They charged credits but they were their own boss.

I have a feeling she won’t care about that fine line.

Not that I will ever look at another female like that again. I have my mate, my kora, and I will not ever be interested in another female while either of us live. She is my true mate.

I know she’s afraid. I know she’s worried and she doesn’t know if she wants another male. But I also know that I would be good for her. I will care for her and she deserves that.

We both do.

I see the auctioneer heading for the stage and I move closer, tugging Lacey along by her hand. She glares at me and I nod towards the stage. Her eyes widen and she nods.

“Hello everyone. Welcome to our auction. We have a lot for you tonight. And as a special surprise we have a species that is rarely seen in space. In any galaxy but their own.”

My heart picks up and Lacey’s head whips over to me. I nod my head and turn her towards the curtain at the back of the room. We make our way there quietly, stopping every once in awhile to take a sip of our drinks and chat. Always moving closer and closer to that curtain until we’re right on top of it.

I see one guard but he is so far along and turned the other way so he doesn’t see me. I take Lacey’s hand and yank her behind the curtain. She huffs but neither one of us can see in this dark section. I move in front of her and carefully pick my way past the different sections of the cages in the back. I see Lacey shiver and her eyes tear up at the sad bunch of females in the cages.

I hate it too. I want to open every single one of the doors and let them all loose. But if we do that, we’re going to have all the guards and staff running right for this area and we’ll be found.

I shake my head and she sighs, her eyes so sad that it kills me. I lightly tap her hand and point to a cage that’s closed in and behind the other ones. We move up to it and then duck behind a rack of clothes when another guard comes through here and almost spots us.

As soon as he’s past, I tug her into the curtain and I pull out my laser light, setting it to low so that it doesn’t show through the curtains. The female that looks up is not a human and I feel Lacey sag against me in disappointment. Her big eyes are vacant and I can tell that they’ve drugged the Mesarnak female. She barely registers us, her lithe, pale body limp in the cage. They’ll probably give her a quick dose of something to wake her up a little bit when they run her in front of their buyers. Just to get a little bit more credits for her.

I sigh and tug Lacey out after I look and see if the hallway is clear. We casually slide back between the curtains and right as we do, a creature slips up beside us, its foxy features tight and its eyes darting back and forth.

“Can I speak to you in private?” His eyes linger on Lacey and it takes all my control not to punch him right in the throat.

But I nod over to the side and he follows me over.

“Can you come see me later? I don’t want to talk here. I might have information that you want. About a certain batch of human females.”

My pulse jumps and I nod my head, making the arrangements to meet him.

“Come alone.” He nods over towards Lacey. “Your little pet will be safe in your room. Say half a moon click.”

I nod my head and stalk back to my mate just as a snarling alien attempts to touch Lacey’s neck and the circlet surrounding it.

I grab his hand. “Touch her again and I’ll feed you your own hand.”

He snaps at me, his sharp teeth exposed but I bare my own fangs and he growls but he moves away.

I pull at Lacey. “Let’s get out of here. I might have a lead.”

She follows quickly after me on her high heels. The sheer fabric on her body leaves tantalizing peeks and I wish that I’d thought of that when I set the disguise for this species. They have a dress that doesn’t cover very much.

We reach the hall and she tries to stop but I keep pulling her. I don’t have much time to meet the alien if I want to buy some information. I am sure that he wants credits. Luckily, I brought along extra cards just in case. I know the way this ship works and credits are the only way to get what you want. Nothing is free.
