“Who the vreck is Alex?” I roar.

She stares at me like I’m a monster, her full lips hanging open in shock. Her golden-brown eyes are so pretty and wide that it takes everything in me not to slam my mouth down on hers.

When she doesn’t answer me right away, I pick her up until her feet dangle off the ground. My face is inches from hers. I walk her backwards to the nearest wall and move so my body pins her to the wall. I pull her hands up in one of mine and glare at her. I don’t like that fear darkens her eyes but I can’t make myself back away.

I lean down and hiss in her tiny ear. “Answer me.”

“Do you remember the tall, dark-haired woman? The one with short hair?” she whispers.

I nod, backing off slightly. “Yes, she was talking to Varnak.” I wouldn’t exactly say talking but that’s the easiest way to describe it.

“That’s Alex,” she sighs.

“Alex is a female,” I groan.

She grins and my heart turns over in my chest. Not to mention what my dick is currently doing in my pants. “Yep. She teaches self-defense specifically for women.”

“I really hope that Varnak survives talking with the tiny terror.”

She giggles and I follow behind her, keeping my distance before I do something insanely stupid like touching this female and making her mine.

“Your English has really gotten quite impressive.”

I chuckle. “I had some time before you woke to practice. We all did. Your language isn’t really as complicated as a Jaren language. They are a strange species.”

“Really? And here I thought we were way more complicated than you.”

I snort. “Please. There are much more intricate languages than yours. You are a simple people. I should have expected you to hit me.”

She shoots me a look again that’s full of sadness. I can see shadows behind her eyes. These shadows are fresh. Painful.

But she turns away. I feel the ship jerk again and curse under my breath.

“The auto has been knocked out by the phaser fire. I’m going to have to fix that quickly or we’re both going to be flying this thing.” I sit back down in the seat and study the controls. “You’ve messed with our destination. We’re heading for Gravnok.” I glare at her. “Trust me. If you think Carvallians are bad. You really don’t want to meet a Gravnok. They are the cannibals of the galaxy.”

Her face pales and I feel a tumbling anxiety in my belly. I wish I didn’t have to tell her these things but she needs to understand that she needs me. She can’t try and get away.

Not if she still wants to live free. Or as free as she can.

That twisty feeling in my belly gets stronger and it’s like I’m hunting kaduna and they’re staring me in the face.

“I’m very sorry for how things are working out for you, little female. But trust me. I’m the safest evil that you’ve got right now. You might not fare as well with someone else.”

Her full lips tighten and turn white as she glares at me. “I am not just sitting still for someone to take over my life.”

“I’m not asking you to. I’m just asking you to work with me and stop fighting me. You can still have a good life.”

She snorts and I run my hands through my hair, tugging.

Yeah, even I don’t believe my own words.

“If you promise me that you won’t attack me again, I’ll show you how all this works. You should know how to fly this if something happens to me.”

She studies me and then nods and we sit together, our eyes locked on the equipment, ignoring the unspoken fears around both of us.

I don’t think she’ll stop and it scares the hell out of me that I might not be able to protect her.

I need her to trust me. And that’s going to be a hard thing with what I have to do to her before we hit Cason 5. It’s the only way.
