She should, but at this point, what she felt for Davis felt right. And not in the way it had with Niles. With him, it was a connection of need. She wanted something or someone, and he checked all the boxes. Davis was the complete opposite. He was everything she shouldn’t have wanted, but she felt more alive than she had in years or ever, honestly.

“You sure about this. If you go in there, you’ll be completely exposed with everything.”

The case. Tia might bring things up that could have people second-guessing my character.

“Maybe it’s time for that. If people want to judge, then let them. I need this to end so I can move forward with my life.”

“With me?” His eyes lowered to hers while he silently waited. When she nodded her confirmation, he leaned in and brushed his lips against hers. “Good, because I want that too.”

The clearing of a throat had Davis and Cassidy turning to find Captain Jones staring awkwardly at the two of them.

“Greene’s on her way.” He pointed at Cassidy. “You in here with me until she gets here.”

Davis grinned and kissed her on the cheek. “Go ahead. I have a few things I need to take care of while we wait.”

She smiled, lowering her eyes briefly, then watching him walk away, knowing that regardless of how things ended, he had given her something she hadn’t felt since she’d lost Clara.

The opportunity to be accepted and loved without judgment.

“This is risky.” DA Greene glanced at Cassidy, Davis, and Captain Jones before she swung her eyes toward the one-way mirror.

“You want a confession that will hold up for a solid conviction, then she needs to go in there.” Cassidy’s eyes shot up to Davis when he stepped forward to make his point.

“I was under the impression that you were good at your job, Detective. Why can’t you go in there to do the same thing instead of relying on her to do your job for you?”

DA Greene arched a brow in Davis’s direction, and Cassidy naturally assumed his reaction would be typical of what she’d seen when someone challenged him about his capabilities. She was shocked when he glanced over his shoulder at her and then smiled at Greene.

“This needs to be her show. It’s what she wants . . .” He tossed his chin toward the interrogation room, then reached back, took hold of Cassidy’s hand, and pulled her to his side. “And it’s what Cass needs.”

Cassidy heard Jones mumble something under his breath, and apparently, Davis did as well because he squeezed her hand. Her cheeks flamed with heat as she looked up to find Greene staring right at her.

“Should I be concerned about whatever this is?” Her tone was professional and sharp as her eyes bounced between Cassidy and Davis.

“Not unless you simply have a thing for minding people’s personal business—”

“Davis . . .” Captain warned.

“Cass and I haven’t crossed any lines that could compromise this case.”

“I damn sure hope not. Whatever you two have going on better not find its way into what’s happening in there, understood?” Greene glanced at Davis, but her words were for Cassidy, so she nodded stiffly.

“Understood.”

“From my understanding, you know how this works. Don’t get in there and forget the rules. If she says anything that sets you off and you can’t keep your shit together, you’re out of there. If I feel like things are getting out of control, I will step in and end this. A confession would be great, but we have enough evidence to get a conviction.”

Cassidy glanced at Davis, who turned to face her. “We have the original video from the night of the murder. It’s what we were thinking. There was another young woman there that night. For most of the recording, it wasn’t Tia on that video. The boyfriend was evidently so high that he didn’t notice or care. We caught them taking pills on camera just before they got started in the bedroom.”

“Are you charging him too?”

“We might. If he truly knew what she was up to that night, it would make him an accessory,” Greene answered instead of Davis.

“Now, are we doing this or not?” Cassidy glanced at Davis, who stepped closer and spoke quietly.

“It’s up to you, Cass.” His hand cuffed the side of her face, and she leaned into his touch and nodded.

“I need this.”

“All right then, let’s go. Let her do most of the talking.” Greene motioned to the one-way, and Cassidy inhaled a deep breath, releasing it slowly before she walked away from the group and stepped to the door. Moments later, she was inside, facing her past.
