“Who said I did any of that?”

“The evidence. Now, let’s go. You and I need to have a nice long talk.”

“I have nothing to say to you, Detective. If you want answers, you can have them, but there’s only one person I’m giving them to. As sexy as you are, it won’t be you.”

He knew the answer before he asked but decided to inquire anyway.

“And who would you like to talk to?”

She smiled, angling her head to the side. “I’m sure you know the answer to that.”

“Unfortunately, I do. Let’s go.”

He jerked her arm and shoved her forward, grabbing the purse from atop the suitcases as they left the apartment.

28.

“What are you doing here?”

Harper stared at Cassidy with a dry yet accusatory expression in place. “I should be asking you that question. Last I checked, this was Davis’s place.”

Cassidy placed her hands on her hips and scowled at Harper. “It is, and he’s not here, so you can leave and drop by another time when he’s home.”

“Would, but I can’t. Not here for him. I’m here for you.”

“Me? Why? And how did you know I was here?”

“I know where you are because your boyfriend told Captain this is where you were, and Captain asked me to retrieve you.”

“I don’t have a boyfriend. I’m married.”

“Widowed. And does the marriage even count since you have no idea who the guy really was?” Harper mumbled and pushed past Cassidy, entering Davis’s house. She closed her eyes briefly, hating how easily she still made that mistake of claiming her old life.

Married.

After closing the door, she turned to find Harper examining things the same as she had done the first time she had been invited into Davis’s home, only she had been invited. Harper hadn’t.

“You can have a seat while you explain why you’re here.”

He glanced her way before doing as she asked and sat on the sofa after unbuttoning his sports coat. “I just told you why. I’m here on Captain’s orders.”

She moved closer, folding her arms over her chest as she peered down at Harper. “I know he sent you here, but you still haven’t explained why, and don’t you dare say because Nate asked him to. That part I get as well.”

“Nate.” Harper chuckled bitterly. “Your boyfriend decided to finally stop wasting the taxpayers’ money and do his damn job. He’s en route to get a suspect. Whoever that suspect is, he felt as if they might end up here looking for you. Not sure how unless you guys are really being that careless with whatever this is. I’m guessing Captain is still trying to cover his ass. If he sent uniforms, it would go on record.”

“A suspect?”

“You and the boyfriend keeping secrets from each other already? Figure you would have been the first to know.”

“What is your problem with Nate, Harper? Or is it not about him, and instead, you have a problem with me or us? I’m over this indignant, condescending streak you’ve been on lately.”

“My problem is that I was accused of compromising a case for taking you to a crime scene to do what you’ve done a million times before—what you’re trained to do. Davis is everyone’s hero when he’s crossed so many damn lines compromising this same case by getting involved with the main and only suspect. If that’s not enough reason for me to have a problem with the two of you, then I don’t know what to tell you.”

“I think it’s more than that. You don’t have a problem with us. You have a problem with him. It doesn’t take much to see that you’re annoyed that he hasn’t fallen under your watch and gotten in line . . .”

Harper stood. “You’re damn right I’m annoyed. He’s an arrogant son of a bitch who doesn’t give a damn about the chain of command.”

“With you, you mean. From what I’ve seen, he respects Jones.”
