Page 45 of Innocent Intent

“Yes. I insisted they be invited to the wedding, but they never came. Makes sense now why they didn’t. We did get a gift. A really nice one, actually, but it was mailed.” She closed her eyes, briefly shaking her head. “It all seems so insane now.”

“I know it’s a stretch, but by any chance, would you know the address the gift was sent from?”

Cassidy felt hopeful. “Oddly enough, I do. I sent them a thank-you note. Only a handful of people, mostly friends of mine, sent gifts since we did a private destination ceremony. I have a file with all the addresses.”

“You mind getting that for me?”

Cassidy left Davis standing in the living room, navigated to her office, and returned with her laptop. She carried it to the sofa, propped the device on her knees, and lifted the lid. Davis followed, sitting next to Cassidy, waiting while she searched for the address.

After locating and opening the file, she turned the laptop so that Davis could see the address on the screen.

“PO Box,” he muttered.

“Right, and it’s been years,” she expressed, stifling the disappointment.

“But many people upstate keep PO Boxes to avoid having their mail stolen or because of constant moving. It’s possible she still has that address.” He glanced at the screen once more. “I will do some digging and see what I can find. You mind sending me that?”

“No, not at all.”

“You have my number?”

“I do. I still have the card you gave me.”

They stared at each other for a long moment before Davis extended to his full height again. “I’m going to get going. Got a few things I need to look into.”

“With my case?”

He nodded but didn’t elaborate. “Seems I’ve lost my main suspect. If I want to keep my job, I might need to be rounding up another.”

She smiled softly. “Yeah, I heard your captain isn’t too pleased with your lack of direction.”

“Harper tell you that?” He angled his head to the side, leaning over Cassidy.

“Among other things.”

“Such as . . .”

“Warned me about blurring lines with you.”

“Harper should mind his gotdamn business,” Davis murmured, and Cassidy smiled.

“You two really don’t get along, do you?”

“More on his end than mine. He have an answer for why that is?”

“Something about you being a dick who didn’t need anyone. And maybe thinking you’re God’s gift to the world might have also been mentioned.”

He belted a laugh, and she loved the sound of it, along with the freeness of his spirit, because she felt he didn’t often share that side of himself with many people. “I’d say he’s a little biased, but he probably has a point.”

“On the dick thing or the God’s gift part?”

“Both, actually. I’m not lacking confidence, and I haven’t been the most courteous.”

“Why is that?”

“I’m a bit of a loner.”

“I feel like I’m at a disadvantage here. You know more about me than I know about you.”
