Page 33 of Innocent Intent

My husband was a loner without family, friends, or other connections.

“I understand your husband didn’t have anyone in his life, but certainly you do, right?”

“I’m not in the position to invite people into my life right now, Detective. What would I tell them? My husband Niles was shot in an apartment that he’d kept, which I wasn’t aware of. Oh, and let’s not forget, he wasn’t actually my husband. He was a man with two identities, neither of which truly belonged to him. I wasn’t jumping at the opportunity to share that story with my intimate circle or stomach the questions that would surely follow. Alone felt like the best option.”

Cassidy stared at Davis unflinchingly. She was angry again. Angry about her reality. Angry that Davis had her here to dig deeper, trying to prove she was responsible for taking a life. He wasn’t going to play nice or dance around the obvious. He had a job to do, which meant finding a killer. She could only hold firmly to her innocence.

“Ask me whatever you want. Let’s get this over with.”

Once again, the two were in a visual standoff, and Davis was the first to concede. Cassidy kept her eyes on him while he began.

“I saw you at Capital Bank yesterday.”

“And?”

“Would you like to tell me why you were there?”

Cassidy smirked. “Would you like to tell me why you were there?”

They were both experts at their jobs—two very strong personalities, and neither willing to give much.

“Williams had a safe deposit box. One that held information about you. I’m assuming that was why you were there. To clean up behind yourself.”

Cassidy faltered briefly. Yes, she was there for the safe deposit box but had naturally assumed it would hold information about Niles or Jerrod. Not once had it crossed her mind there would be something incriminating about her.

“What did you find?”

“Passports, identification that matched them. There were additional names besides the two you were familiar with, but more importantly, a flash drive with case file photos. One of your case files.”

Cassidy frowned before asking. “Why would he have one of my case files?”

“I was hoping you had the answer to that question.”

“I haven’t got a clue. We rarely discussed my cases. Which one did he have photos of?”

“Your first one.”

Cassidy’s chest constricted like someone had wound a rubber band around her, hindering her ability to breathe.

“You okay, Ms. Evans?”

When the fog cleared, she placed a hand on the table. Her fist was clenched tightly, and Davis’s eyes were on her.

“Yes, I’m fine.”

“You sure? It seems that you got lost there for a minute.”

“I assure you I’m fine. I have no idea why Niles would have a copy of that case file.”

“Cut the shit, Cassidy. Was your husband blackmailing you?”

Her defenses heightened, and her expression hardened. “Why would he be blackmailing me?”

“If I had to guess, I’d say because he discovered you lied on that case. Your testimony sealed the conviction, and all these years later, you’re second-guessing your actions.”

Her eyes flared with anger. “I didn’t lie.”

“Maybe not, but if you had, that would mean your entire career and the careers of those involved with that case would be questioned. Hundreds of cases that you were attached to that they handled would be brought into question. I’m sure you can imagine what a mess that would create. If your husband found out that you lied . . .”
