“Yes.”

“Did you?”

“No, Detective. You can see from the video that I didn’t follow him inside. I went back to my car.”

“You did, but you were there for over three hours. Based on where you were parked, plus the lighting and angle of the camera, I can’t be sure that you didn’t slip out the other side to enter the building through the stairwell.”

“I didn’t.”

He nodded. “Why didn’t you mention that you were there the night your husband was murdered, Cassidy?”

He intentionally used her first name this time. She had insisted on them being familiar when he questioned her at her home. Using her name now was more or less a taunt.

“Because I hadn’t yet understood what was happening and how my life was changing. I had no idea who my husband truly was, and I was still processing that information.”

“You intentionally kept evidence concealed? Evidence that could help find your husband’s killer.”

“Yes. I suppose if that’s how you’d like to look at it.”

“You realize how this looks, don’t you?”

“Of course I do, Detective. It looks like a woman still processing that her husband was a fraud. That our life together was a lie. It looks like a woman who felt betrayed and devastated after finding out that her happily ever after wasn’t so happy.” Her tone was clipped, the first display of any real emotion since the questioning began, and Davis was almost inclined to believe her.

Almost.

“Which means you had motive.”

“As does anyone else connected to the life that Niles was living completely separate and unbeknownst to me. Maybe you should consider that, Detective.”

Davis kept his eyes trained on Cassidy. She was once again guarded. The mask was back on. He wasn’t surprised. This wasn’t her first rodeo; it was simply her first one in her current position—as a suspect.

“Are you insinuating that I’m incapable of doing my job, Ms. Evans?”

“Absolutely not, Detective. Only that there’s more than one possibility here. Your job is to find the killer. Mine is to prove it’s not me. We’re not exactly on the same team, are we?”

“It appears we’re not.”

Cassidy tucked a few loose strands of hair behind her ear, but her eyes remained on Davis.

“Are you arresting me?”

“Not at the moment. Everything we have is circumstantial, and you’re willingly cooperating.”

I also want you to be free to move around so that I can see if you are hiding anything.

“Do you have any more questions?”

“No. You’re free to go, but I will need you to hand over your passport and stay close to home for now.”

“I have seminars scheduled. They’ve been confirmed for months now. Should I cancel them?”

“If they’re out of state, I would prefer you did. However, if you need to travel, I must insist you inform me of your whereabouts. But otherwise, use your own discretion.”

“Right.”

Cassidy stood and lifted her purse, sliding an arm through the strap and pulling it over her shoulder. “If that’s all, I’ll be on my way.”

“Yes, that’s all for now. Thank you for coming in. If I have any further questions, I’ll be in touch.”
