“Good.” He shifts in his bed trying to sit up. “Then I guess the only other question I have for you is, what are your intentions with my daughter?”

I laugh and wipe the moisture from my face. All of the emotions I’ve been holding in the last few days are threatening to come out all at once.

I clear my throat and stand up straight. “Nothing but the most admirable of intentions, sir.”

“Do you make her happy?”

“I hope so. I try to.”

“Will you do everything in your power to take care of her?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Do you love her?”

“Yes, sir.”

Dan smiles. “I’m proud of you.”

Emotions catch in my throat. Those four words are everything I have ever wanted and needed to hear.

“Is there anything you need to ask me?” He gives me a knowing look.

I don’t even have to think twice. “I’d like your permission to ask Millie to marry me.”

Chapter 32

Millie

I’ve hardly left my dad’s side since he was released from the hospital. I’m pretty sure I’m annoying him, but I don’t care. You can’t scare someone like that and expect them to give you space. I’ve gone as far as sleeping in my childhood bedroom and bringing my laptop with me so I can work from the house.

“Mills, why don’t you go get something to drink,” Mom says from the opposite side of the couch.

I keep typing on my laptop. “I’m fine.”

She clears her throat causing me to look up at her. “It wasn’t really a suggestion.”

I narrow my eyes at her and point to my tumbler sitting on the coffee table. “It’s still more than half full. I’m fine.”

“Amelia, go to the kitchen.”

“Fine.” I set my computer down and huff towards the kitchen like I’m some sullen teenager. When I walk in, all of my siblings are waiting for me. “What’s going on?”

Danny slides next to me putting his arm around my shoulders. “Think of this as an intervention.”

Matt copies the motion on the other side, sandwiching me in. “Mills, you’re driving everyone nuts.”

“You haven’t left Dad’s side since he got home,” Maeley says gently.

“Neither have you,” I retort.

“You’ve basically moved back in,” Ben says.

“So have Jake and Drew!”

“Hey!” Jake complains. “We’re only here until we start our next project.”

“Yeah,” Drew chimes in. “It just so happened that our break between projects fit in with when Dad was released and recovering from everything.”
