“If they all know then it’s only a matter of time. And the longer we go without saying anything the more it looks like we are hiding it.”

She wraps her hands around my neck and pulls me in closer to her. “And I’m not hiding.”

“I’m not hiding either.” My voice is husky and gravelly. Our lips barely brush when the front door opens. In walks Kiersten, Torrance, and of course, Jon.

Chapter 28

Millie

“Jonathan!” I bounce off Mark’s lap and beeline it for the front door.

Jonathan’s eyes narrowed in on us, and then he turned and stormed out.

“Jonathan! Will you wait up?”

He stops, his shoulders heaving. He’s breathing hard.

“Geez, your legs are long,” I try to joke, but as soon as he turns and fixes his eyes on me, all jokes end. His eyes are a stormy gray that I have never seen before. I take a step back.

“Tell me again how nothing is going on between you and Mark.”

“I’m sorry.” My voice is barely a whisper. “I wanted to tell you so many times.”

“But you didn’t.” There is fury mixed with hurt in his tone.

“I didn’t know—”

“You didn’t know what?” He spits out. His tone makes something inside me snap, and now I’m angry too.

“I didn’t know how to tell you. I didn’t want you to ruin it!”

“Ruin it? Ruin what, Millie?” His eyes darken even more. “How long?”

“Why can’t you be happy for me?!” Tears are streaming down my face, but that doesn’t stop me from screaming at Jonathan.

“How long?” He says through gritted teeth.

“A month.” I try to calm my voice, but it still crackles with emotion.

“How can I be happy for something I know will hurt you?” His words cut deep. “I thought we had gotten past all of this years ago. You didn’t like him anymore.”

My heart stops. He knew?

“Didn’t you learn a long time ago that Mark doesn’t do relationships?”

“Hey!” Mark yells from behind me. “Who are you to decide whether or not I do relationships?”

“Just an active observer,” Jonathan spits out. “You’ve never taken any relationship seriously. What makes this time different? You’re going to ruin Millie just like Dad ruined Mom.”

Mark squares his shoulders as he stands toe to toe with Jonathan, glaring. “I’m nothing like Jack!” He spits out the disdain in his voice palpable. “And Millie is the furthest thing from Mom.”

“At least until you’re done with her,” Jonathan seethes.

What happens next is a blur. Suddenly both men are wrestling on the ground. There are grunts and sounds of flesh hitting flesh. No amount of screaming is stopping them. I’m too weak to pull them apart.

A car pulls up to the curb and out jumps Ben.

Ben races over and pulls Mark off of Jonathan. I’m yelling for it all to stop through thick tears. I can hardly see.
