I take a deep breath. “Okay. Fine. It’s about Mark.” I sigh. “Ashleigh says I just need to give him time, but I don’t know.”

“Big baby,” scoffs Tori.

Kiersten slaps Tori in the arm.

“It’s a confusing situation for both of you,” she reassures me.

Tori rubs her arm. “What else did the wise Ashleigh have to say?”

There is no mistaking her sarcastic tone, but I choose to ignore it.

“That Mark had dinner at their house last night and was absolutely miserable and that she’s never seen him like this before.” I shrug. “I don’t know. He was pretty adamant in his message this afternoon that he doesn’t want to hurt Jonathan.”

“I just don’t think that Jonathan would stand in the way if the two of you wanted to be together,” Kiersten says.

“I don’t know,” Tori interjects. “I’ve never seen him so mad. He was pretty upset when he left. He hasn’t answered any of my messages all day either. Have you tried?”

“No.” I hadn’t even thought about talking with Jonathan. How terrible of a friend am I? I groan, throwing my head into my hands.

“So what are you going to do? Avoid everyone and bake until you run out of supplies?”

“Maybe? What else am I supposed to do? I can’t just sit here and idly wait. I have to do something, or I’m going to go crazy.”

“Just go to his house,” Tori says while stuffing another cookie into her mouth.

Kiersten’s eyes widen. “Jonathan’s or Mark’s?”

“Mark’s. It doesn’t matter what Jonathan thinks if Mark doesn’t want to go forward,” Tori reasons.

“And do what, Tori?!” I’m so tired I can’t even try and hide my annoyance.

“Tell him you like him.”

“Just like that? What if he doesn’t answer the door?”

“If he’s home, he’ll answer the door.”

“You don’t know that.”

“He’ll answer the door, Millie,” she says more reassuringly.

“Even so, he could still refuse to talk to me. What then?”

“He’s not going to turn you away.”

“There’s no way for you to know that.”

“I saw how he was looking at you Saturday. He’s into you.”

I scoff.

“If he wasn’t into you, then he wouldn’t be so hurt and upset right now.”

“But if he does, which he won’t, but if he does,” Kiersten cuts in, “you walk away knowing you did everything you could and at least you tried.”

“I don’t even know where his house is.”

“Excuses. Excuses,” Tori singsongs.
