It was now or never.

“Adam!” Kris shouted.

In a flash, Adam reached into his pocket and pulled out something silver and hard ? his flask. He threw it with an impressive arm. Taken by surprise, Terrance flailed, swatting it away with the side of his gun. It was in this moment of confusion that Sam bit down hard on his forearm. The shock of pain made him lose balance. He tumbled backwards…

And dragged Sam along with him.

I dashed forward and leapt after her, grabbing onto her wrist and holding on for dear life. It was Charlie who grabbed onto me, Kris to Charlie, and Adam to Kris, forming a human lifeline to keep us from falling to our deaths.

There was nobody to hold onto Terrance.

“Pull!” Kris shouted.

Charlie, Kris, and Adam tugged hard, dragging Sam and myself back over the edge to safety. We all landed in one huge pile, stunned into silence. Sam clung to me, shaking uncontrollably and barely breathing.

“We’ve got you.” I croaked against her cheek. “We’ve got you, sweetheart.”

She choked on a sob, her face twisting up in a mix of relief and anguish. We held her tight, surrounding her in our arms, kissing her where we could. She was terribly cold, hyperventilating.

Adam cupped her face. “Breathe, angel. Just breathe.”

“I—” She wailed. “I was—”

Charlie took her hand and kissed her fingers. “Don’t talk, sugar. You’re in shock. Just take a moment to calm down.”

Kris took her other hand and planted his lips against her delicate palm. “Are you hurt?”

“N-No, but I—” Sam swallowed hard. Adam wiped up the tears that trailed down her cheeks with his thumbs. “Are any of you hurt? I was so worried!”

“We’re fine, sweetheart. We’re fine. We’re just glad you’re okay.”

“I k-kicked him in the balls,” she said, either proud of herself or angry or both.

Kris kissed her wrists. They were a bit swollen. She must have fought against whatever restraints they used on her.

“Is Arianna okay?” Sam asked with a sniffle. She was starting to catch her breath, her shock slowly subsiding.

Charlie nodded. “She’s safe all thanks to you and your quick thinking.”

“Are you sure you want to go into law?” Adam teased. “You’d make a brilliant bodyguard.”

This earned us a laugh. It was brief, but it was a sign that she was returning to her old self. “No, thank you,” she mumbled.

I kissed the tip of her nose. “Let’s get you out of here. Can you stand?”

“I think so.”

Since they were already holding her hands, Charlie and Kris helped her onto her feet. We all rose, looking around briefly to survey the chaos. Sam seemed genuinely terrified at all the limp bodies we’d left in our wake.

“Did you… Are theydead?”

Charlie shook his head. “Fuck no, that’d be way too much paperwork. We used tranquilizers and rubber bullets. They’ll be asleep for a little while, long enough for the police to cuff them. The only casualty was—”

They all looked at me, faces full of concern.

I carefully stepped toward the ledge and peered over. It wasn’t a pretty sight.

“Liam?” Sam whispered.
