“I wanted to talk to you about Max,” he said, “with regards to his schooling. I happen to know a couple of members on this school’s board. Placement is highly competitive, but I think I can secure a place for him if you would like him to attend here.”

My mouth dropped open a little. “You want to send him to private school?”

“It’s a thought I had. I’m obviously not going to make any decisions without consulting you first.”

My cheeks warmed to see Kris wanting to be so involved. “It’s a lot to think about,” I admitted. “The tuition alone would be too much for me to—”

“You wouldn’t be doing it alone, remember? I’ll cover everything.”

“But…”

“Sam,” Kris said calmly. “You’ve already done so much for our son. It’s my turn to contribute.”

Our son.

The words sent a shiver down my spine. I’d raised Max all alone for so long that the thought of sharing the responsibility was foreign to me. Foreign, but not unwelcome.

“Right,” I said softly. “Can I think about it some more? Maybe look at a couple other options?”

Kris kissed my temple. “Of course, Sam. We’ve got plenty of time. Just say the word, and I’ll make a few phone calls.”

I smiled up at him. “Thank you. For everything.”

“No need to thank me. I’m just doing what a father should.”

I nibbled on my bottom lip, unsure if I wanted to kiss him, hug him, or jump his bones. Instead, I said, “Um… About earlier…”

He closed his laptop. “Let’s go for a drive.”

“Excuse me?”

Kris took my hand. “You and me. A little joyride around the city. What do you say?”

I felt like he was avoiding the conversation, but I had to admit that spending time with Kris alone sounded nice. I barely had any time with him compared to Adam, Liam, and Charlie. Even though it was incredibly late, or incredibly early, whichever way you looked at it, I was going to jump at the chance to get some alone time with him.2

“Okay,” I said. “Let me get dressed into something more comfortable.”

“You’re fine like this,” Kris said, wrapping an arm around me. The tips of our noses touched, his sweet breath ricocheting off my cheeks.

I giggled. “But I’m in my shorts and sleep shirt.”

“And you look gorgeous. Come on. We’ll be in the car the whole time, so it doesn’t matter what you wear.”

I brushed my lips against his, not quite a kiss and more of a tease. “Can I drive?”

Kris chuckled. “You know what? Sure.”

With an excited little squeal, we headed toward the elevator doors.

Macau at night was beautiful.

It reminded me very much of Las Vegas, the glow of neon lights against the black night sky. The pale blues and purples made the city feel futuristic, otherworldly ? the colors of the lights reflecting off the surface of the still bay like a gorgeous, shimmering mirror. From where we were, I could see the unique architecture of the Hotel Grand Lisboa, all lit up and standing like an inverted Chinese temple.

I put the car in park. Kris had directed me the entire way, bringing us to a secluded parking area up a peak that gave us a wonderful view of the sparkling city below.

“How would you rate my driving?” I teased him.
