“I’m sorry for the trouble, Nana. Do you want me to talk to him?”

“No, it’s okay. I’ve just managed to put him to bed. I could wake him up so you can talk, if you’d like.”

“No, no. He needs his rest. I’ll try calling again later.”

“It’s awful quiet where you are. Are you alone, dear?”

“The others stepped out for a few hours. I’ve got some alone time.”

“I hope you find the time to enjoy yourself. You work so hard.” Nana smiled wistfully. “Thank you very much for the deposit, by the way. I’ll make sure to take Max clothes shopping this weekend. He’s growing out of his old shirts so fast!”

“Deposit? What deposit?”

“I got the notification on my phone this morning. I received a deposit of a couple thousand dollars. It came with one of those e-transfer messages saying that the money was for Max and me to treat ourselves. I figured it must have been from you and your signing bonus.”

I shook my head. “I didn’t…”

It wasn’t very hard to figure out who might have sent the money.

I’ll make sure you’ll want for nothing ever again.

My mouth stretched into a big smile. “It was probably Kris. I’ll have to thank him when he gets back.”

Nana raised her eyebrows. “The father? Does this mean you’ve told him?”

“I have.” I giggled, warmth blooming in my chest. “Oh, Nana. He was so understanding.”

“I’m so glad, dear.” She looked like she was about to cry happy tears. “Oh, that’s such a relief.”

“Why’s that?”

“I’m not getting any younger, Sam. One day I won’t be here to help you and Max.”

“Please don’t talk like that. I want you around well past a hundred and thirty!”

She chuckled. “In all seriousness, I’m glad that he wants to be a part of your lives. I know you’ve always been independent, but it’ll be good to have someone there to help raise Max with you. Kris sounds like a very good man.”

I nodded along, more than a little pleased. “He’s the best. They all are.”

“I’m glad you’re getting along with your team.”

Team, I thought smugly. They’re so much more than that.

“I’ll let you go, Nana. I’ll be home by the end of the week.”

“I can’t wait, my dear.”

“Please give Max a kiss and love from me when he gets up.”

I hung up the phone and set it down on the kitchen island, finishing off my modest breakfast of pineapple chunks, sweet grapes, and tangy strawberries. In a week’s time, we’d be back in New York. I wondered if that would change anything for us and our relationship. I wouldn’t be working with Grand Paradise Security once my contract was completed, but I sincerely hoped that I got to spend as much time with the guys as I did now. If Kris was going to take a more active role in Max’s life, maybe Adam, Charlie, and Liam could, too.

I’ll introduce them to Max as their uncles.

After I polished off a glass of water, I got changed to head down to the gym. The penthouse was far too quiet to remain in alone, but that wasn’t the only reason I decided to head downstairs.

He was in kind of a bad mood this morning.

The hotel’s gym was impressive considering its small space. Three ellipticals and three treadmills were lined up along the windows facing out toward Macau’s bridges across the bay. There was a set of free weights tucked in one corner, a rowing machine in the other. It wasn’t hard to spot Liam because he was the only one there, punishing a weighted punching bag with his solid fists.
