“R-right,” she whispered. “Of course.”

We were still holding onto her. She made no attempt to move away. I couldn’t stop staring at her lips. Every muscle in my body was tense as I fought the urge to dip down and kiss her. Adam looked similarly troubled, his hands still on her waist.

His hunger mirrored mine, and yet we didn’t dare make a move. Especially when Kris and Liam weren’t here. We had all made a pact, a silent agreement that if we ever found ourselves drawn to a woman, weallhad to be on board. Otherwise, we risked a repeat of Jessica, and none of us wanted that.

“Here,” I said, offering Sam my hand. “Let me help you to your seat. In case there’s more turbulence.”

I helped her get settled in the spacious leather seat of the private jet and sat down across from her. Adam took the seat directly to her right.

Sam licked her lips before she said, “I have a question.”

“What is it?”

“The other day at dinner… That woman who showed up at our table. Jessica?”

“What about her?” I asked.

“She… She said some things that I’ve been really curious about.” Sam smiled sheepishly. “You know what? Never mind. It’s not my place to ask.”

“You don’t have to be shy with us,” Adam insisted. “You can ask us anything.”

She swallowed and took a deep breath. “I guess I’m struggling to find the right way to phrase it.”

I could sense what she was trying to say, so I carefully said, “You want to know who she was to us.”

Sam nodded. “Yes.”

Adam and I exchanged a look. There was no sense in keeping it from her. After Jessica’s rude interruption at dinner, I was certain Sam already had some idea of what had happened.

“Jessica was…” Adam hesitated.

“She was our girlfriend,” I answered, a bit more firmly. Sometimes it was just easier to rip the bandage off in one go. “The four of us dated her.”

Sam, to her credit, only blinked. She allowed the information to settle before she asked, “As in each of you individually, or…?”

Adam sucked in a deep breath. “Collectively,” he answered. “We were all in a relationship together.”

She nodded slowly. “Interesting.”

“That’s it?” I asked. “That doesn’t weird you out?”

Sam shrugged, casually crossing one gorgeous leg over the other. The flash of her thigh caught my attention. I had to force myself to look away. “Why would that weird me out?” she asked calmly. “Polyamory is a thing. Not exactly common from what I understand, but no less legitimate.”

Adam and I exchanged another look. I could practically read his thoughts.

Oh.This changes a few things.

“Can I ask you why it ended?” she continued. She spoke softly, like she was treading over thin ice.

“We made it very clear early on that we wanted open communication,” I said. “If we were going to be with her ? and her with us ? we needed to be on the same page at all times. We agreed that there’d be no jealousy, no mind games. Just the five of us on equal footing.”

“I take it from your tone that’s not what happened?”

Adam sneered. “Jessica was… How do I put this?”

“Immature?” I offered.

“Exactly. She didn’t seem to understand that it wasn’t a competition between us. We all wanted to be with her equally. We wanted toloveher equally. But she had… preferences.”
