A cold shiver runs up my spine.
“There’s no way he’s still alive,” I tell her. “Leander must have been fucking with you.”
“Maybe,” Roz sighs. “I don’t want to think about it right now, anyway.”
“What do you want to think about?”
Brushing her cheek against my chest one last time, Rozalia looks up at me. A mischievous spark glints behind her fiery green eyes.
“How we’re going to deal with that pissy Italian downstairs.”
A big smile takes hold of my face.
“You’re not worried that my family might see you?”
“I hear they’re coming around to me,” she smirks back.
“It’s true. Though, I think they’re still trying to wrap their heads around our, um, ‘uncommon partnership’.”
“How hard are they trying?”
“A lot harder ever since you helped fabricate the evidence that implicated Leander in the union building fire—as well as half the charges my dad was facing,” I shrug. “One day, you’ll have to tell me how you did it. Shit. Because of you, the feds had to throw out their case against my dad. I’m sure they’ll try to find another reason to come after him. But you’ve bought us a whole lot of time. And in this business, the only thing more valuable than power is time.”
“Even more powerful than love?” Roz teases.
I take her hand.
“Love is only powerful when it lasts forever,” I tell her. “And this shit right here, it’s going to last forever. I’ll make sure of it.”
“I’ll help,” Roz lilts. “I mean, if I have to.”
“I insist.” Intertwining our fingers, we head for the bedroom door. There’s little I want to do more than pin her against the wall and fuck her until we’re both leaking, but I know there’s no hurry anymore.
Rozalia is mine. And I’m hers. Forever.
They’ll be plenty of time for each other after we’ve dealt with our responsibilities.
“How’s Babcia, by the way?” I ask, when we step out into the hallway.
“Good,” Roz nods. “At least, she’s healthier than you are right now.”
“And Kaja?”
“I’m taking her to visit your sister tonight,” she says.
To everyone’s surprise, Roz and Mel have been getting along progressively well over the past month. It’s almost worrying. How long will it take until my sister wants to be just like my Black Cat?
“Good,” I note. “Mel needs something to pick her up. She’s been so cold to me lately. I worry she hasn’t actually forgiven me for leaving her here while I went out chasing you.”
“I’m sure she will,” Rozalia comforts me. “Eventually. You’re family, after all.”
Stopping at the top of the staircase that leads downstairs, I let us bask in the morning light seeping down through the large sunroof in the ceiling.
“And what are we?” I ask, taking Roz’s other hand too.
“We’re something weird and unexplainable,” she smiles.
“Try your best.”
