My hackles rise.
Is this the trap I was so worried about?
My fingers inch towards my gun.
“What the hell is that?” Rian grumbles. Picking up his pants, he buckles his belt and brushes past me. “Who is it?”
A name comes from the other side of the door, but I can’t quite make it out. Whoever it is, he has enough of Rian’s trust to get him to open up.
But before my Irish lion does that, he looks back over at me.
“Are you decent?” he asks, those blue eyes somehow cutting through the darkness.
“Never was and never will be. But I’m not hiding it either.”
“Does that mean I can open this door?” he taunts.
“You can do whatever you want.”
Those deep blue eyes look me up and down. That tongue flickers over his blood-red lips.
“I’ll take that as permission the next time I want to fuck you.”
With that, he opens the door.
A stream of light floods in, momentarily blinding me.
“Don Kilpatrick. Please, come with me. We have an emergency.”
“What emergency?” I hear Rian growl.
“There’s been an attack.”
My heart drops.
It feels like the electricity in the room is immediately zapped away. My hand falls from my gun.
“Fuck,” Rian curses. He starts to speak to the man at the door, but my ears rush with blood.
I don’t know what the fuck is going on, but it sounds like bad news for me.
Looking over my shoulder, I search for the nearest escape route. Slowly, my vision refocuses. At the end of the hallway is a door. I start to make my way to it.
I’ve hardly taken three steps when I feel a strong hand on my shoulder.
“Where are you going?” Rian’s voice is deep and stern. All Of his suave calmness from the date is gone. So is the savage charm he just fucked me with.
“I heard what happened,” I say, not daring to turn around. “I’m not about to stay here so I can be blamed for it.”
I try to pull away, but Rian digs his fingers deeper into my shoulder.
“Be honest with me, Roz,” he says, the sternness in his voice breaking ever so slightly. My heart clenches against the hint of sincerity. He’s suspicious. But he’s also hurt. “You were sent as a distraction, weren’t you?”
I shake his hand off of my shoulder.
“By who? I don’t work for anyone anymore,” I spit, finally turning to face him.
His beautiful face has turned to stone. The once electric air has become thick with tension.
