“She’s home now, and she’s my daughter too.”
“Step-daughter,” I spit, remembering the hate that Francesca held for this woman. It might actually have been our first bonding moment, even if my little slave didn’t know it.
“Whatever,” Sonia says, rolling her eyes. “I’m not worried about the girl. She’s tough. But I’m not happy with you for making my man squirm like that. Tell me why he looked so uncomfortable.”
God, I just want to string her around the neck and tell her the truth. Your shiny new husband is a rat. Soon, he’ll be dead, and your step-daughter will be mine, along with everything Domenico Galli owns. You’ll have nothing. And that’s more than you deserve.
But I can’t say that. I can’t give away my position. Sonia would only run back inside and tell Domenico what I’ve said. Then I’d be in for a battle, instead of a massacre.
“He looked uncomfortable because he should be uncomfortable around me. I’m his boss and he fucked up. A don’s daughter can’t go missing under my reign. I won’t allow it.”
“Look at you,” Sonia teases. “So big and powerful. Don’t forget where you came from, now.”
“Oh, I remember all too well. Which is why this conversation is over.”
Completing my trip to the driver side door, I open up and immediately lock the passenger door.
“Wait!” Sonia begs, her voice creaky as she still attempts to open the locked door.
“You have five seconds.”
“You bastard.”
“Four…”
“I think I know why Francesca was taken,” Sonia blurts out.
That catches my attention.
“Speak.”
Looking over her shoulder to make sure the coast is clear, Sonia taps on the car window and I lower it just enough so that she can shove her big fat lips through.
“Someone might have kidnapped her to make Domenico pay his debts. Look, it’s not easy for me to say, but he’s been having money troubles.”
Any hopes I’d had for this woman are quickly dashed. She’s just confirming shit that I already know. This is definitely not worth the time I’m wasting on her.
“Does he know you have a fortune tucked away for a rainy day?” I ask her, accusation lining my every word.
“He knows I have a little something if we need it,” Sonia smirks.
“You didn’t think Francesca was worth digging into the trust fund your ex left behind?”
“I heard you were on the case, honey. And I know you well enough to understand that you don’t fail.”
I’m so sick of her bullshit. Twisting my key into the ignition, I drown her out with the sound of my revving engine.
Still, I can’t help but get one last jab in before I drive off.
“I’m betting you regret not leaving this world behind now, huh?” I say, leaning over so that I’m sure she can hear me.
Being married to a doomed don seems like Sonia’s worse nightmare. She deserves it. But she doesn’t appear to be too bothered by it.
“We both know that kids like us can never escape,” Sonia smirks back.
“We’re not kids anymore, doll.”
“That’s clear enough, babe. You’re all man.”
