A shiver skates up my spine at the thought of what a man like Ray Byrne might do to me if I upset him. Is he like all of the shitty men who work for my father? Is he like my father?

No. It’s only been two days, but my gut tells me he’s different.

I’m supposed to be his slave. But that was my choice, not his. I’m not locked in this gilded cage like I am at home.

But where does that leave me on matters of personal freedom, like making calls to the outside world?

I have no clue. And I’m not sure I want to risk breaking some implied rule. What will Ray do if he thinks I’m being unfaithful?

He’ll punish me.

Fuck.

Even just the thought of him bending me over his knee for a good spanking sends a hot tingle washing over my skin. Somehow, I’ve managed to keep my hands away from my pussy for the entire day, but in the blink of an eye, I can feel myself getting wet; I can feel my clit begging to be touched again.

Ray is ruining me.

And it feels good.

Maybe I want him to punish me, after all.

With that thought in mind, I switch off my phone’s airplane mode and immediately open up my contacts menu.

Before I can find Janice’s name, though, my phone is bombarded with a backlog of texts. It’s immediately clear that at least half of them are from my friend.

Shit.

Before I can get lost in her messages, though, I force myself to give her a call.

She picks up before the second ring can even finish.

“Are you alright?!” The frantic energy in her voice throws me off guard. I’m not used to people being so… emotional.

“Yeah, yeah, I’m fine,” I quickly assure her. “Sorry, I unplugged from the grid for a bit. I should have let you know earlier.”

“Why the hell did you do that?” Janice asks, her frantic pace calming.

Still, I can sense a heavy dread weighing down her words.

What’s wrong?

“Just personal reasons,” I sigh, not wanting to lie to her, but knowing full well that I can’t expose the full truth.

“… Does it have anything to do with that kid who got murdered at the party?”

For a moment, my heart stops beating. I already know that Ray killed Jonathan, he told me so himself. But while I’m used to talking about death and violence in the company of killers, hearing the raw, human emotion in Janice’s voice makes me realize that she’s even more innocent than I am.

It almost makes me angry at Ray.

Our darkness is supposed to stay contained. People like Janice and Jonathan should never have to experience it—even if Jonathan was planning on doing something so vile…

“No,” I force myself to say. “It’s just personal stuff. I… I didn’t even know someone was killed. Where? It wasn’t at the party we went to, was it?”

It hurts to lie, but I know it’s for the best.

“Of course it was,” Janice chokes, it sounds like she’s had a rough past couple of days. It only makes me feel so much more guilty for not contacting her earlier. “I’m so sorry I convinced you to go there. I thought something had happened to you too. We should have never split up.”

“Hey, hey, hey, it’s alright, I’m fine. Nothing happened to me,” I say. “I’m safe and sound. How are you?”
