Fucking hell.
The Cadillac still hasn’t found its bearings as I weave in and out of traffic three cars back.
My heart is in my fucking throat.
What kind of fucking vehicle can’t take a little shove to the bumper? The car looked solid enough, but it’s been on the verge of flipping over ever since I clipped its taillight.
The piece of junk must be even older than it looks. That’s typical Domenico. The Italian bastard is always cutting corners.
Or, rather, he was always cutting corners.
I was already on the highway when I got the call. The disgraced don is dead. Shot in the head and left for the vultures in front of his very own house.
Somehow, the news didn’t shock me. Even if it pissed me off that someone else got to him first, it was immediately apparent what had happened.
Sonia is going rogue.
She wants to start anew… again. But she can’t do that until she’s set everything from her past on fire.
It started with me, then moved on to Domenico.
Francesca is next on the list.
Shit.
She’s right there. She’s so fucking close. But I can’t just reach out and grab her, no matter how badly I want to.
Hell, even through all of the blood that stained her pretty face, she looked like a fucking angel. Somehow, one of the Cadillac’s back windows had shattered, and I was able to call out to her.
My gut was right. She’s in that fucking car.
Our eyes met, and I could tell that she thought I was dead. Sonia must have told her everything. She probably been torturing my princess all of this time.
I can’t let it go on for a second longer.
A flurry of angry horns honk at me as I speed up in a desperate bid to catch back up to the out-of-control Cadillac.
If I don’t do something soon, they’re going to crash. Francesca has already experienced enough pain. She only deserves happiness from here on out.
But the longer this chase goes on for, the less opportunity there is for a happy ending.
Fuck. My only hope might just be to pin them against the guardrail at the side of the road. That way, I can force them to come to a safe stop, even if that’s the last thing they want.
If that’s what I have to do, then so be it.
Keeping one hand on my gun, and the other on the steering wheel, I cut in between the last two cars separating me from my girl.
Through the howling wind, I can hear screams coming from up ahead.
It’s Sonia. She’s lost her goddamned mind. Whether that’s from a concussion or from her own failure, it’s hard to say, but no sane person fires out into traffic like she just did, not with a face full of blood, not on the highway.
She’s not thinking about consequences anymore. She’s only thinking about revenge.
Really, I should shut my window and let her gunshots rebound harmlessly off of the bullet proof glass. But I know Francesca needs to see me. She needs to hear me.
She needs to know I’m coming.
