“He failed at giving me what I want,” Sonia says, shaking her head.
“And what did you want?” Morbid curiosity is the only thing keeping me going right now. So, I latch onto it, even if I’m not sure why I should bother.
It’s all over, no matter what I do. Without Ray, this was always my destiny.
Father was never going to protect me.
“Everything,” Sonia shrugs, her gaze wandering off onto some distant point. “I wanted to rule the dark world that kicked me around when I was growing up. But now I see how foolish that ambition was. I should have escape this chaos when I had the chance. Built my own little empire in the light. But the darkness is intoxicating. The men are addictive. Even the losers like your father are more manly than any rich boy out in the regular world. You understand that, don’t you, dear?”
Sonia’s dark eyes focus back on me and I want to use all of the energy I have left to spit on her.
She’s talking about Ray. The fucking harpy.
I’m angry enough now that I’ll give her what she wants. Fuck going out with a whimper.
“I don’t understand anything about you,” I hiss.
“It’s because you’re blinded by foolish love,” Sonia sighs. “But that’s not your fault. Ray tricked you. There’s no way to exist in this darkness except on your own. Otherwise you become distracted and weak. You perish, just like he did, and just like you will. He forgot that all important fact—that one can only survive alone—and I made him pay for it.”
“He didn’t trick me…” I mumble. “He helped me see the truth.”
“The truth is that he’s dead,” Sonia taunts. “So is your father. And soon—”
Before she can finish her morbid victory speech, Sonia is interrupted by an impact that makes us both lurch forward.
The seatbelt I’ve been locked into catches me before I can be thrown too far, but Sonia never strapped herself in, and she’s tossed across the back seat straight into the dark divider that separates us from the front of the car.
A sickening crunch follows, and when the car swerves, she’s thrown back again, this time into the bloody imprint left by Father’s body.
“What the fuck are you doing, Roberto!” Sonia screeches, grabbing her face as the car rocks back and forth, desperately trying to catch its balance.
“We were just rear ended!” I hear a familiar voice shout back through the divider.
Roberto. That’s one of the younger guards who used to patrol the halls outside of my room. Sonia must have recruited him to be her getaway driver. I guess her pussy paid more than my father ever did.
“By who?” Sonia shouts.
“I don’t fucking know!”
The car swerves violently again and Sonia has to reach out to break her fall as she’s whipped across the backseat one more time.
Without her hands to cover up her freshly broken nose, a stream of thick red blood spurts out from her face, splashing all over me.
“Fuck,” I cough, desperately trying to spit it out. What the hell is happening?
“Get control of this fucking car!” Sonia yells. Holding onto the door handle for dear life, she desperately tries to pull herself back onto her seat.
But before she can manage that, Roberto takes another sharp turn, pinning her against the inside of the Cadillac’s door. This time, she doesn’t even have the opportunity to yell, though. Because her gun comes flying out from between the cushions, smacking her against the face so hard that the trigger gives in and a bullet rips out of the barrel.
The deafening boom of the firing gun fills the back seat for only a split second before it’s overcome by an even louder sound.
I know for a fact that these windows are supposed to be bullet proof, but that must be from the outside only. Because all it takes is that single accidental shot to shatter one of the thick glass panes from the inside.
Just like that, the car is filled with roaring wind. It lashes against my face as Roberto continues to speed down the highway, swerving between traffic in a desperate attempt to regain control of the car, and escape whoever pushed us off balance in the first place.
The chaos is so sudden that I hardly have time to process it all before a bloody Sonia begins to crawl over me. Her open wounds leak onto my face as she points the gun out of the shattered window.
“Come and get me!” she screams, firing out into traffic like a fucking maniac.
