For someone who can do all that she’s done, for someone who has ruined as many lives as she’s ruined, she sure can fuck it all up, too.

“I’m going to kill her,” Sonia mumbles, seemingly more to herself than to me.

Just as quickly as her skin turned white, it starts to glow with a furious red-hot anger.

My heart drops. It doesn’t take a genius to know who’s she’s talking about.

Francesca.

“You won’t get the chance,” I growl, fists tightening.

Still, I know I’m helpless right now.

There needs to be a way out of this building…

“I still have all of the leverage,” Sonia says, her eyes darting wildly as she tries to readjust her crumbling scheme. “I’ve always had all the leverage. Men want what I have…”

“You can’t fuck your way out of this,” I remind her.

But Sonia just shakes her head. “I have information, too,” she mumbles. “Political information. Andrew’s parents weren’t the saints they tried to publicly paint themselves as. They dug up dirt on every senator from here to fucking California, and I inherited it all. Artuzov wouldn’t even do what I asked until I told him all about the troves of blackmail I had tucked away for a rainy day. My body wasn’t enough for him, not at first…”

“Political blackmail won’t save you from shit now,” I growl.

Fuck. With information like that, she could very well leverage herself out of any kind of criminal charges. But we don’t work like that in the underworld. We aren’t looking to put her in prison.

And she knows it.

“Then, I guess this is goodbye for me, as well,” Sonia sighs. Just like that, her voice sounds like it’s a million miles away.

If she wasn’t so despicable, I might almost feel bad for her. She thought she was about to become a queen. Instead, she’ll be just another rotting corpse.

“Or you can let me walk out of here and we can discuss your punishment like grown-ups,” I try to bargain.

That brings a little force back to Sonia’s sunken face. “Do you really think I’m that stupid?” she hisses, anger clawing up through her disappointment. “No. Fuck this. You can die now. I’ll die later. But not until after I make sure to take your little plaything down with me…”

“You won’t touch Francesca,” I shout.

But Sonia just laughs. “Believe me, honey. It’s better that she dies. I don’t care for the brat at all, but what her father has planned for her is far worse than death.”

Her words tear through my heart like a jagged blade.

“What the fuck is Domenico going to do with her?” I demand to know.

“Maybe I’ll tell you when we meet again in hell,” Sonia says, forcing a faint smile onto her blood red lips. Before I can respond, she lifts up the remote so that I can see the red button. “Any last words?”

I’m about to curse her the fuck out, dare her to kill me, tell her there’s no escape, when I hear a heavy thud boom down from somewhere above my head.

It’s followed by another, then another, each more silent than the last.

That’s when it hits me.

The roof.

Sonia never said anything about wiring any bombs to the roof. Probably because you can’t access it from anywhere inside the plant. But she didn’t have enough forethought to think about the men I’d bring with me. The men waiting outside.

That’s them on the roof now. It has to be.

They’re going to get me out of here. I just need to give them the time.
