“My wife and I.”
Sonia.
What’s their play here? Francesca doesn’t get along with either of them. Why should I give them one last chance to hurt her?
“Don’t you want to know why I want your daughter?” I ask, becoming more suspicious by the second. The simple explanation I gave to Domenico this morning was that I wanted a young wife, and his beautiful daughter didn’t seem opposed to the idea when I brought it up at her ‘interrogation’. But to give in so easily just makes me think there’s more to it than meets the eye.
“You’ve already explained,” Domenico grumbles, like he’s being held at gunpoint.
I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that he was.
Sonia.
Her wickedness sticks to my mind.
What is she planning? Why the hell is she with Domenico?
Where the hell is—
Before I can finish that thought, I have a revelation.
It hits me like a fucking freight train.
No. There’s no way. No fucking way…
My fingers have gone weak from the shock, and I nearly drop my phone as I realize that maybe I wasn’t as far off as I feared.
“We will meet tonight at my compound. Midnight,” I say, speaking into the receiver, trying with everything I have to keep the rising fury from my voice. “You will be allowed to bring four guards with you. Unarmed. Do you agree?”
Walk into my trap, you fucking bastard.
My foot starts to tap against the hospital floor. Just like that, I’m anxious as hell.
I knew there was something off about your family, Galli—but maybe it wasn’t you, after all. At least, not entirely. You were too stupid to be the mastermind.
“Agreed.” With his attendance confirmed, I hang up.
There’s no time to waste. I need to prepare.
Tonight won’t just be the last time Domenico will see his daughter, it will be the first time I see his family for what it truly is.
A den of traitors.
I’ll be studying you with new eyes, you bastards. And you’ll break. I’ll have your secrets, and I’ll have my victory.
Taking Francesca will be my prize. The cherry on top.
Sonia, on the other hand, will be the filth I crush beneath my heel.
She’s the rat.
It seems so fucking obvious now, even if I don’t know why she would do such a stupid fucking thing.
My gut wasn’t wrong, after all—just a little bit off base. Fuck. It’s almost a relief. But there’s no time to bathe in the satisfaction of my discovery.
This is the answer I’ve been searching for.
It has to be.
