The longer I have to think about it, the less sure I become.

I’m a princess locked in a tower, and the only prince for miles around is the one holding me here.

He kissed me like he was trying to save me from something. But what was there to save me from other than him?

I’m not your type.

… He was trying to save me from myself. From my own insecurities. Fuck. Could there be some humanity behind those steely blue eyes?

You are exactly my type, Sophia Xiphias. That’s the fucking problem.

Before I can fall any deeper in my own thoughts, a sound at the door makes me jump to attention. The lock unclicks and the door swings open.

But Maeve doesn’t enter my room.

It’s him.

Leonid Barinov.

He’s back.

… And his beautiful face is covered in dark dust, and dripping with blood.

My heart sinks. But it’s not from fear.

I grew up around violence. Blood is nothing to be scared of.

Then why is my heart suddenly racing?

Shit. Maybe it is fear, after all… but not of my captor. No. In this moment, I’m not scared of him. But I might be scared of what has happened to him.

“You… You’re hurt.” I mumble.

Leo stands in the doorway, his sharp blue eyes straining to see me, even with the lights on. His wavy golden hair is parted down the middle and damp with sweat. Half is face is covered in some kind of dust. Blood drips from his perfect lips.

“Are you alright?” he asks, still standing in the doorway.

That was the last thing I expected to hear him say.

“I’m fine,” I mumble. Shaking my head, I try to think clearly. “What about you? What happened?” Before I know what I’m doing I’ve stood up.

Something is drawing me towards the wounded beast. I fight against it.

Don’t get too close. He may have kissed you like a prince, but he’s as unpredictable as a wild animal.

“The Greeks…” Leonid grumbles, taking a deep breath. “Your Greeks. They blew up a library. I was there. I tried to stop them, but I was too late…”

My heart catches in my throat.

They did what?!

“… Was anyone hurt?” I almost don’t dare to ask. Innocent civilians have usually been off limits to us. If this is true, then we’ve crossed a line I never wanted to cross.

“Yes,” Leonid sighs, a heaviness drawing his blue eyes away from me and down to the floor. “I tried to save them, but…”

Dropping his head, a dark shadow comes over his face as it’s covered by his golden hair.

A knot appears in my gut.
