“… And if a bomb does go off, and these people die, will we have their blood on our hands?”

“It wouldn’t be the first time my hands were painted red,” I huff.

“I guess I could say the same thing.”

With that, we start our search.

Stalking down the halls and towering rows of books, we keep our eyes open and our ears peeled. It’s quiet enough in here that I can hear every cough and footstep, every whisper and sigh.

But nothing stands out.

“Let’s split up,” I suggest. “You go up top, I’ll go down low.”

Ray just nods. The second he turns away, I take a deep breath and slam a fist against my thigh. My whole leg is tingling, and the further I walk, the deeper my limp becomes.

What the fuck is going on?

Sophia must still be stuck in the back of my mind.

… Is it the books?

Do they remind me of her plea for mercy?

Whatever it is, I try my best to ignore it as I limp through a door with a ‘Staff Only’ sign attached to it. A long damp set of stairs greet me, and I pull my gun out as I make my way down them.

I can feel something in the air shift. There’s a danger to this musky scent wafting up from below. It’s a good sign. It means we might just be in the right place.

The second my foot leaves the bottom step, I feel my phone buzz in my pocket. Leaning back against a cold cement wall, I check the text I just received. It’s from Maksim.

Have men at about two dozen different libraries. So far, nothing suspicious.

Fuck. What if we’re wrong? What if the Greeks are planning to bomb some fucking school?

Maybe we should have sent men to school zones instead of to fucking libraries…

“…. Einai etoimo?”

The voice comes from just around the corner ahead. It stops me in my tracks.

Those words. They’re Greek.

I freeze.

Is it ready?

“Ena defterolepto Akoma,” grumbles another voice.

Just one more second.

There’s no time to think about what needs to be done. I just do it.

Drawing my gun, I jump around the corner, but the tingle in my leg has gone numb, and I don’t get the push I need to catch them by surprise.

That means the Greek fuckers see me before I see them. I’m only saved by the fact that my gun is already out.

“Skata!” One of them shouts, and by the time I spot them, they’ve already turned their backs and started running.

I only spot two men. One of them has something tucked beneath his arm. A tangle of electrical wires curl out from it.
