… But what does that mean for Castor?

My heart sinks as I think about my oldest friend and protector. He’s the closest thing I have left to family, and he’s being held by Retsos. Those two men hate each other.

A sickening feeling invades my gut as I dare think about what Castor might be going through.

Retsos has assured me that he won’t hurt the old enforcer if I do as I’m told, but how could I believe him? He’s lied so many times before, and he’s such a cruel, twisted person.

Fuck.

All of this time, I’ve known the harsh reality. No matter what I do, Castor is probably going to suffer. My foolish naivety blinded me. After father’s death, all I saw was red. But I should have been looking forward. I should have been looking around me—especially behind me.

Retsos was waiting to stab me in the back.

I’m almost glad to have been stolen from him. Maybe now he’ll have to face the consequences of his actions. Though, I’m not holding my breath.

The world isn’t fair. If anyone knows that, it’s me. I learned that lesson long ago, when father forced me to watch as he burned my books alongside those bodies…

A sound at my door snaps me to attention.

Sitting up in bed, I hear the lock click.

Before the door even opens, I know who it is. His presence precedes him; it’s huge and dark and ominous, and it sends an uninvited shock of heat dancing over my skin.

Leonid has returned.

Before he can see me, I try to sit up straight, like I’m not being crushed by the weight of the world. No matter how weak I feel, I need to stay strong. For Castor. For myself. For my empire.

You’re a queen, Sophia. Just last month, you got a thousand Greek soldiers to rally around you. You can withstand Leonid Barinov for a little bit longer.

… But only if he doesn’t touch you again.

The second my captor appears in the doorway, I know I’m in trouble. My heart skips a beat at the sight of him. That blonde hair. The tattoos. Those blue eyes are on fire. There’s such resentment in his glare.

Suddenly, I remember how I helped choose his brother, Roman, from that lineup of bloody boys all of those years ago.

Does he know?

Leonid must hate me for stealing his brother away from him. If only he knew what might have happened to Roman if I hadn’t chosen the boy with the green eyes…

“How are you feeling?” Leonid asks.

“Fine,” I quickly respond, not wanting to do anything that might make him pounce.

I need to stay strong.

“You don’t look fine.”

Bastard. Is he poking me on purpose?

“That might have something to do with the way you’ve been treating me.”

Leonid stops his advance and I can see the focus in his gaze falter. Before he can regain control of himself, a subtle bite of his lower lip tells me exactly what he’s thinking.

I’m thinking the same thing.

He spanked me. He held me over his knee and got an erection so big and hard I could practically feel his cock inside of my stomach.

My thighs clench and my toes curl as a warmth builds in my core.
