“As you wish, princess,” Leonid grumbles under his breath as he whips open the door.

“Asshole!” I yell after him as he slams that door shut behind him, leaving me splayed out and tied up.

I may get the last word in, but Leonid gets the last laugh, and I can hear him click the bolt shut on my door, locking me into my cage for real.

Fuck.

“What is your plan?”

“My plan is to get her to talk.”

Aiden Kilpatrick doesn’t seem too happy about that response.

“… Is that all?”

“What does that mean?” I push him, pinching my cell phone between my shoulder and my ear as I search the basement for something important.

“Ray says that Sophia is quite the looker. And Valentina says you have her tied up in your bed…”

A flash of jealous rage nearly blinds me.

“Ray said what?!”

I know it’s foolish, to be possessive over a girl I only just met. But first, Sophia was going to be my wife, and now, she’s my captive. Ray should know better than to talk about her like that.

However you cut it, she’s mine. He doesn’t get to talk, look, or think about her like that. No one does. Hell, I shouldn’t…

“Never mind what Ray said,” Aiden is quick to nip that shit in the bud. “Listen to what I’m saying: the Greeks want her back. Now. Unless, of course, you’re willing to sign a marriage contract and put a ring on her finger…”

That little bit of news forms knot in my gut.

What the hell is going on?

“They don’t care that she’s a hostage?”

“The man I talked to, Thales Retsos, doesn’t seem to mind either way, as long as there’s peace.”

“Does that not make you suspicious?” I ask the leader of the Kilpatrick Clan. The great don of New York. The man I’m supposed to be working with to rule the underworld. For someone so revered and powerful, he sure seems to be missing something important. Maybe he’s just as blinded by thoughts of peace as I am by thoughts of Sophia’s long tender thighs…

“Why would it make me suspicious?”

Finally, I find what I’m looking for. A tripod. Attached to the top is a camera.

Before I answer Aiden’s stupid question with the obvious answer, I put my phone on speaker and text Maksim an important note.

Camera #7. Connect it’s Bluetooth to my private security stream. Now.

“It’s suspicious because Retsos’ careless attitude towards his fucking princess being kidnapped contradicts her supposed importance to his cause. This girl was able to rally the Greek army in only a couple of months, even after they had dispersed. And now every one of them is suddenly just willing to sit back and politely ask for peace after I’ve stolen and defiled her? Without any consequences? It doesn’t add up.”

“… Defile her?”

“Shut up, you know what I mean.”

Throwing the tripod over my shoulder, I shove my cell phone back up to my ear, taking it off speaker.
