“Without a leader, the Greek soldiers that rallied around Sophia could become rogue terrorists,” Nolan says. “And we know all too well just how effective they can be when it comes to terror.”

“They’re smarter than you’re willing to give them credit for,” Valentina adds, stepping towards me. The frantic anger is slowly fading from her voice, but the ruthless leader is emerging. Well, the ruthless leader in me is already out. “Remember how they got into the Kilpatrick compound? Knock out gas. Bombs. Fire. It didn’t matter that we had our children in there. We were all targets.”

Fuck. She really knows how to push my buttons.

My fists clench as I remember that night when I almost let everyone down. God damn. I tried so hard to protect them all, but in the end, I couldn’t do it alone. I was lucky to have help.

But so were the Greeks.

“The Greeks were assisted by a rogue DEA agent,” I remind both my sister and my brother. “They won’t have any more of those up their sleeve.”

“And how do we know that?” Roman asks.

“We don’t. Not for sure,” I admit. “But I’ll find out. The princess will talk. You better believe that.”

“Let’s hope you’re right,” Roman says, his gaze drifting back to the door.

“Does she know that we killed her father?” Valentina asks.

“Yes.”

“Does she seem like the type to forgive such an offence?”

No.

“It doesn’t matter,” I sneer. “Don’t forget who I am, Val. I’ve made the hardest monster’s squeal their darkest secrets. A teenage girl shouldn’t be much of a challenge.”

“She’s not just any teenage girl,” Valentina reminds me. “She managed to rally the Greek army after it had already split up and spread out. She’s special.”

Special.

My chest nearly ruptures at that word.

But it’s not just because I’m angry that Valentina would think so highly of someone I hate. And it’s not just because it’s true.

It’s because I know that she’s special. And it’s not just because of what she’s done.

There’s something else about Sophia. Something that has hooked me. Something that I can’t shake, no matter how hard I try. Something that has made me stupid and reckless.

It’s that something that made me steal her. It’s that something that brought her here, into enemy territory, next to me.

She’s in my bedroom. Fucking hell.

“Enough talk,” I bark, trying to hide any signs of my discomfort. A dull ache is throbbing alive in my leg… and something else is threatening to throb alive right alongside of it.

I don’t need my siblings around to see this part of me.

“You’ve got a lot more talking to do,” Roman says, a little smirk lifting the edges of his lips. “Just not with us. Come on, Val, let’s leave the king to it.”

Before he turns around to leave, though, he gives one last laser look towards the door. Then his gaze falls on me.

“Good luck, Leo,” Valentina says.

“Good luck,” Roman repeats.

“Luck will have nothing to do with it.”

“Let’s hope that’s true.”
