It’s speaks volumes that I’m more worried that he’ll see my arousal than I am of whatever he has planned for me.

“I’m not going to hurt you, princess,” Leonid assures me. Grabbing my wrist, he pulls my arm behind my back, then he takes the other and does the same.

I can feel the soft silky restraints tighten against my skin.

“Don’t call me princess.”

It’s like a reflex at this point. As soon as I say it, I know I’ve fucked up.

But to my surprise, Leonid hardly even takes notice of my slip-up.

Instead, when he’s done tying my wrists behind my back, he leans down so that his chest is hovering just inches above my shoulder blades.

“Is that tight enough?” He whispers into my ear.

He waits long enough for a response that I figure I’ve been given permission to speak.

“I thought I wasn’t supposed to say a word?

His deep chuckles crash against my temple like a scorching wind.

“That was a test. You failed.”

His waist pushes harder down into my ass and my toes curl so tightly that I lose all feeling in my feet.

“This isn’t a game,” I spit, almost angrier at myself for my reaction than I am at him for causing it.

“Life is but a game,” he responds, reaching for something in one of his pockets. I sink further down into the mattress and the pressure swirling in my core picks up to nuclear speed. “And you are losing.”

I’m not afforded the opportunity for a response. Before I can get another word out, Leonid pries my lips open with his thumb, then he sticks his thick finger between my teeth.

My tongue retreats in fear. But really, all it wants to do is go greet the strange flesh that has just invaded its home.

Instead, it’s quickly introduced to a new visitor. A ball gag. In the blink of an eye, Leonid has shoved the silicone orb into my mouth and strapped the leather restraint around the back of my head. The buckle pulls my hair tight to my skull and for a second, I’m too shocked to react.

But when I realize what has just happened, and when I understand that this is not a nightmare, but the harsh reality of my own spiralling life, I explode.

“You fucking bastard!” I try to scream, enraged at the disrespect. But all I end up doing is choking. I’m overcome by a coughing fit as Leonid tosses me around and rips a bag over my head.

The darkness is suffocating, and I start to kick and scream and cough as hard as I can—whatever it takes to get away from the monster. But he holds me so tightly that I can feel his pulse.

The dark prince’s heartbeat is terrifyingly steady.

He’s not bothered by my outburst. He’s not worried we might get caught.

And as we step onto the window still of my gilded cage, my stomach drops.

No. No. No.

This can’t be happening.

He can’t take me.

For as bad as Retsos is, I at least know what he wants. Power. And that makes him easier to handle. If you know someone’s deepest desires, you can barter with them. There’s hope. Even if they are a monster.

Leonid Barinov, on the other hand, is a foreign threat. An alien beast. I don’t know what he wants, and that means there can be no reasoning with him.

If he locks me up, then I’m his. There will be no help. No working things out. No saving my empire… or my oldest and only friend.
