After changing back into my nightgown, I slip under my covers. Then I wrap into a ball and promise myself to not think about Leonid Barinov anymore. Not until morning, at least.
And even then, I will only think about him for one reason, and one reason only.
I’m going to figure out a way to get rid of the Russian prince. Him and Retsos both.
They’re dead men. Because it’s them or me. And even if the thought just passed dangerously close to my mind, I don’t want to die.
Not yet.
Not without getting my revenge first.

My eyes rip open to complete and utter darkness.
What was that?
Without daring to move, I try to focus on what I think I just heard.
… It almost sounded like another tap at the window.
Was I dreaming? Or was it real?
All I can hear is my pounding pulse as I keep my ear pressed down against my pillow.
No. That’s not true. There’s another faint sound. What is it?
My eyes strain to see in the darkness. Slowly, I can just make out the silhouette of my bedroom window.
That’s when I understand what the other sound is.
The drapes are open and fluttering against a breeze.
My heart catches in my throat.
The window is open.
Someone has opened the window.
Before I can jump out of bed, I feel a massive hand wrap around my mouth. The scorching palm presses against my lips and pulls me back down to the mattress.
“Quiet now, princess. I wouldn’t want to hurt you…”
