“I’m not marrying him!”

“You’ve been given a second chance, Sophia…”

“Are you deaf? I said, I’m not marrying him!”

“Castor has been given a second chance…”

Just like that, my throat seizes up. I haven’t forgotten about my friend, but sometimes I get overwhelmed with everything else.

“You bastard…”

“This is the game we all play, girl,” Retsos sneers. He’s lording over my bed like he owns me. Surprisingly, though, he hasn’t laid a single hand on my body. Though, I can tell that he wants to. He wants me to suffer for making him look like a fool earlier.

Well, he is a fool.

But so am I.

“This isn’t a game. This is my life. This is his life…” I rasp.

“And you can save his life by doing as I say.”

“… Or I could just tell everyone that you’re a traitor.”

Retsos visibly tenses up at my accusation. “No one would believe you.”

“They wouldn’t have to believe me. For as dumb and oblivious as he may be, Leonid Barinov was right when he said that the Greeks have rallied around me and not you. If I tell them to strike, they will, even if it’s at a man who’s supposed to be untouchable…”

“I’ll make sure they never hear you,” Retsos spits.

“Only one man has to hear me. Then, word will spread. Sure, you could kill me before anyone came to my rescue. But then everyone would know who did it and you would lose your chance at gaining any kind of power.”

“You’re not the one I would kill,” Retsos snarls back at me. Turning away from my bed, he gives me enough room so I can pull the blankets over my body.

Despite the warmth of the covers, a cold shiver still crawls over my skin.

“Let him go…” I plead.

“Not until I get what I want.”

“What do you want?”

“Everything.”

Retsos walks up to the window and I force myself to stare at his ghostly reflection in the glass. My father should have known better than to ever promote this monster to such a position of power. He doesn’t care about our empire. He only cares about himself. And if he gets what he wants, he’ll plunder our kingdom for everything its worth and leave our legacy in ashes.

I can’t let him do that.

But I can’t let him kill Castor either.

“You only get everything if I play along,” I remind Retsos.

“And your friend only survives if you do as I say.” Turning back around to face me, I can tell that Retsos wants to hit me with every ounce of his being. But he can’t. Not after learning that Leonid Barinov is willing to give me another chance, even despite the mess I caused earlier today.

Why the hell is that asshole giving me another chance?

That stupid devil dressed up as a prince looked at me with such disgust. He was so clearly furious with how I spoke to him. And he left without giving me one last look. Yet, he still might marry me.

Why?
