Leo and I both know what our blood tastes like.

We’re after more than just each other’s blood now. We’re after revenge.

“That’s just the start,” I bluff, unsure of how much truth my statement holds. “The rest of the Greek army will be coming for your head soon enough, you piece of shit.”

Spyros said there were hundreds of more men who would follow me, but we didn’t have time to gather them from all over the country. Leo was in trouble.

“Not if I don’t buy them off first.”

“You don’t have the money.”

“Oh, yes I do.” Retsos’ inverted cheeks seem to suck into black holes as a Cheshire grin takes hold of his disturbing face. “And it’s all thanks to your dear old protector.”

The mention of Castor catches me off guard. But when I remember what Retsos did to him, I only get angrier.

“You’ll never bother Castor again,” I spit. “Whatever he said while you tortured him, however you think he helped you, it’s all dust. We’ll burn it away soon enough.”

Retsos seems unphased by my threats.

“He’s still never told you, has he?” he smirks, a taunting darkness flickering over his mangled face.

“… Told me what?” I gulp, unable to keep myself from taking the bait.

Just buy as much time as you can, Sophia. Just give Leo and Castor the time to find you. They’re still alive. Can’t you feel it?

“About the money, about your mother, about your life.”

“I know all about my life,” I hiss. “And don’t you dare put my mother’s name in your mouth.”

“You don’t know the half of it,” Retsos sneers, leaning forward enough that I can smell his putrid breath on my aching cheek.

“Fuck off.”

“No. I don’t think I will. You’ve been a pain in my ass ever since you were born… Hell, even before you were born. For twenty years, I’ve wanted your head on a platter. But something has always held me back. What’s holding me back now?”

“You want to gloat,” I quickly respond, worried that if I don’t keep him talking, he might actually kill me.

“No, I don’t want to gloat. I want you to suffer.”

“Nothing you can say will make me suffer more than having to look at your ugly face for one second longer.”

“Want to bet?”

The confidence in Retsos’ words send a wave of dread crashing into my chest.

What could he possibly know that I don’t?

“Bet what? My freedom?”

“How about this…” Retsos smiles. “If you aren’t crying by the time I’ve told you everything, then I will untie your restraints and let you walk out of that door. Deal?”

“Deal,” I immediately spit, even though I’m not sure I could keep from crying no matter what I learn. Even just thinking about the possibility that Leo is dead makes me want to tear up.

So, I don’t think about it. Instead, I concentrate on Retsos, no matter how rancid he is. His face makes me angry, and my rage can burn away any tears.

“And what do I get if you cry?” he says, licking his lips like a fucking reptile.

“You get to win.”
