… But only one man comes tumbling out.

Spyros.

“Get back inside, Spyros,” Castor warns, making it clear that he’ll shoot first and ask questions later.

“Hey, easy there, big fella,” Spyros says, raising his hands in the air as the door shuts behind him. “Remember, I gave the little lady my gun. I’m unarmed.”

“I’ve shot unarmed men before,” Castor grumbles.

“Well, that’s actually what I’ve come out here to discuss…”

For some reason, that piques my interest, and I step around Castor to look at Spyros directly in the eyes… but not before I make sure he sees that I’m still holding his gun.

“Speak,” I demand, not wanting to waste anymore time.

Leo could be in danger…

“It’s just… well. What you said inside. About massacring innocents. I wanted you to know that I don’t do that. I’m a fighter, Sophia—just like you. But I don’t fight those who can’t fight back.”

His false claim sends a hot flame flickering up my chest.

“I know about the bombs, Spyros,” I snap back. “The government buildings. The library. Hell, do you hear those sirens in the distance? Do you see those helicopters patrolling ahead? It sounds like you set some more off, and all for what? I’m here. I’m free. And it had nothing to do with the terror you inspired.”

“… Sophia… We never set off any bombs.”

The look on Spyros face as those words come out of his mouth twists my gut into a knot.

He looks utterly baffled by the accusation.

It catches me off guard.

“… What?” It’s all I can manage to sputter out.

“We never set off any bombs. Sure, we’ve heard about them, but we have no idea who’s doing it. We thought it was something separate.”

“If it wasn’t you, then who the fuck was it?” Castor pipes up.

It seems like the Italians were right. It wasn’t Spyros and his men.

“Honest to god, I have no fucking idea,” Spyros says. “But if it means that much to you, Sophia. I’m willing to swear my featly. We’ll figure it out, together.”

Then, without fucking warning, one of the toughest fighter’s I’ve ever known bends to his fucking knee. It doesn’t matter that we’re in a dirty alleyway, or that he’s far too high-ranking to ever do this for anyone. He shows his commitment to me, and I’m nearly blown the fuck away.

“Spyros…”

“There’s no one I’d rather serve than you, Sophia. And every last man in that bar feels the same way. Wherever you go, we will follow.”

For a moment, I’m too stunned to respond. Hell, I can barely move. This was the last thing I was expecting. Especially after I used my first words to these men to praise their sworn enemy.

Leo…

He might need my help.

There’s no time to be shocked. No time to play queen. We need to act.

“Fine,” I say. Tucking Spyros’ Glock away again, I turn from him and start to march towards the car that Castor drove us here in.

“Where are you going?” Spyros calls out.
