It only takes him a second to crumble over the edge of the roof and plummet to the alley below.

I don’t hear his body hit the ground, but I do hear the reactions to his appearance.

“What the fuck was that?”

“A body!”

“I told you those were gunshots.”

When I see the flashlights, I know it’s the police. I need to get the fuck out of here.

Leaving the headless corpse for the cops to find, I stand up and gather my fallen weapons. Then, I wait for the flashlights to turn away from the gap between the roofs.

I’m close to the brownstone, but there’s only one way to get there without being seen.

Taking a running start, I hold my breath and think of Sophia.

She’s gone…

My rage propels me forward, and I manage to jump between rooftops, getting just far enough for a rough landing on the other side.

After that, it only takes me a matter of minutes to find another fire escape and climb down it. Half a block later, I’m running up to the brownstone. Leg burning, lungs burning, heart burning. I might as well be on fucking fire.

“Leo!”

It doesn’t matter that there are cops patrolling nearby, after what just happened, my first instinct is to pull out my gun and point it towards the approaching voice.

But it’s just Maksim.

“Are you alright?” I ask, shoving my gun away again.

“I’m fine. Have you gone inside yet?”

“No. Have you?”

Maksim shakes his head, desperately trying to catch his breath. He just ran half the length of Manhattan. “I just got here. Did you hear the gunshots?”

“Yes. They were meant for me.”

“Fuck.”

“I handled them,” I growl, remembering those last words.

She’s gone.

No. I won’t believe it. Not until I see it for myself.

Turning around, I open up the door to the brownstone.

“Where are you going?” Maksim asks, when I step inside.

“I’m going to make sure Sophia is still here.”

“I… I don’t think she is, boss. Didn’t you get the text?”

Whipping around, I glare at Maksim. “What text? You were on the line with me when my phone was shot to bits. I haven’t gotten any fucking text.”

My rage is building. The inside of the house is dead quiet. I know the dead man was right.
