“I did. I see the jealous rage in your eyes, young man. Even if your love is sick and twisted. It’s still there.”

“I don’t love anyone…” I grumble

“Not even your sister? Not even your long-lost brother? How is your Roman, anyway? It’s been so long since I saw that stone-cold killer…”

“Enough!”, I roar, hating that this old man is handling himself so well. Or is it that I’m falling apart? Fucking hell. I never used to be like this. But Sophia has changed me… And I still don’t know if it’s for the better. “I’m here to ask you questions, not the other way around.”

“Fine, then,” Castor shrugs. “Ask away.”

“Will you answer honestly?”

“I will answer how I want to answer.”

With a sneer, I reach into my pocket and pull out the long silver key I used to get in here. I place it between my fingers, the long end sticking out, and I make sure that Castor understands the implication.

“If you ever want to see Sophia again, you’ll answer truthfully—otherwise, I will gouge your fucking eyes out.”

My threat seems to stiffen the beaten enforcer a little bit. He knows who I am, he should know that I’m not one to make empty threats.

“What do you want to know, boy?” he sneers, clearly ready to tango.

Slowly, I start to circle my hulking captive.

“Everything,” I growl. “I want to know everything.”

“Everything is an awful lot to go through,” Castor snarls, as I step back in front of him.

“I’ve got all the time in the world,” I reply, the cold metal key rubbing against the skin between my fingers.

“I don’t…” Castor sighs. “They fucked me up pretty bad back there… and you’re definitely not helping.”

“I gave you a doctor. What more do you need?”

“Hope…”

The guilt returns with a vengeance. This is supposed to be Sophia’s closest confidant. The man she trusts most in the world. Even if I wasn’t such a possessive fool, I might be sane enough right now to think twice about treating him so poorly. But I am who I am, and I learn how I learn.

“Here’s some hope. No matter what happens, Sophia will be fine. I’ll make sure of it.”

Straightening his back, Castor looks at me with an intense curiosity. Sure, his gaze is filled with suspicion, but I can tell that he wants to believe what I’m saying. He wants to believe that I would do anything to defend the girl he dedicated his life to protecting.

But why should he trust me?

“Words are like wind…” he mumbles.

“I’m a man of action. If anyone tries to hurt her, they will pay ten times over.”

“… Then why is Retsos still alive?”

The question hits me like a punch in the gut.

“Because he doesn’t want to hurt her. He wants to use her.”

“No,” Castor shakes his head. “He wants her dead.”
