Fuck. My poor Castor. He’s probably locked in some dark, dank basemen… being tortured for information… or just for fun. Retsos never liked Castor. He was the only one who ever dared challenge him. But it was only ever for my sake.

My gallant giant… He’s suffering because of me. Just like all of those innocent people that my men are taking their anger out on.

I need to fix this. If Leo can help, then I need to let him help.

“How did you meet him?”

“I… I don’t remember,” I confess. “He was just always there. Even before I was born. From what I know, he was assigned to be my protector the moment I was conceived.”

Leo tilts his head ever so slightly, and a thick blonde lock falls over his left eye. “What does being your protector involve?”

“It means just that. Protecting me. Where ever I went, Castor was by my side. When I traveled, he lead the way. When I read, he stood outside the door. When I went outside, he made sure the coast was clear.”

“What about when you slept?”

“He stood watch.”

“In your room?”

“No…” I sigh, seeing where this is going. Leo isn’t over his jealousy yet. “Always outside the door. Castor was the only person I knew who ever respected my privacy.”

“Where would he stand when you showered? When you bathed? When you changed?”

“Enough, Leo!” I hear myself shout. My voice rattles alongside the cutlery as I slam an open palm down on the table. “I’m telling you, he was like an uncle to me. A good uncle. There was never anything else, I swear.”

Part of me understands what Leo is considering, still I don’t dare speak it out loud.

He wants to steal Castor away from Retsos.

If anyone could do it, it would be Leo. But he needs to be assured that my protector isn’t a competitor. That Castor would do what’s best for me.

To my disappointment, Leo pushes back his chair and stands up. The cold intensity blazing in his powerful blue eyes is still there. But there’s something else too. Something more emotional.

My heart sinks.

… But instead of leaving, Leo steps around the table, and leans down.

The kiss he gives me is so tender that it melts away all of the tension we just built up.

“I believe you,” he says, pulling back.

Without another word, he turns away—this time for good.

I can only watch as he disappears behind the rooftop door, leaving me in shock.

What just happened?

Then it hits me like a fucking wrecking ball.

… Is he going to bring Castor back to me?

Leo

It hurts to leave Sophia alone on the roof.

But what hurts more is knowing just how true my words were.
