But that doesn’t stop the truth from seeping in every once in a while. Fuck. No matter how hard I concentrate on her body, there’s always that harsh jackhammer pounding in the back of my mind. There can’t be a happy ending here. Not without a hell of a fight.

“… And what if we pretend you’re free?” I ask, tracing Sophia’s curves with the back of my hand as we lie next to each other in bed. She stares up at the ceiling, sinking into the mattress we just defiled again, her perfect tits heaving as she tries to catch her breath.

“My men aren’t stupid, Leo,” Sophia sighs. “If they think I’m free, they’ll want to come to me, and the second I’m surrounded by them, there will be no getting me back.”

“Just watch me,” I growl. “I stole you once, I can steal you again.”

Sophia rolls onto her side, conflict raging in her chestnut eyes. “Is that a risk you’re willing to take?”

Placing my thumb on her bottom lip, I stare at the mouth I’ve gotten to know so well. “I could ask you the same question.”

She doesn’t seem so sure she wants to leave my side.

Another sigh drifts from Sophia’s perfect lips. I catch it in my palm. “Whatever this is becoming…” she starts, before trailing off. “… It doesn’t compare to freedom.”

“But you wouldn’t be truly free, even if I let you walk out of my front door tomorrow. Retsos will still have something of yours, something you won’t let him break, even if it could save you so much time and pain.”

“… I’d rather save him,” Sophia says, unafraid.

Three days ago, I would have punished her for mentioning Castor in my presence again, even if I brought him up first. But ever since I claimed Sophia on the roof, I’ve become more interested in the man than threatened by him.

He could hold the key to all of this.

Of course, Sophia and I could just get married already. Then Retsos might be satisfied enough to give Castor up, and Sophia’s men would become mine.

Fucking hell. Marriage.

Neither of us want that…

For some reason, the option seems to be off the table. Why? I’m not so sure. Something has grown between us, something that’s far more complex than the thorny wall that was there when we first met. Whatever it is, it’s still blocking us off from falling completely into each other.

But even if it wasn’t there, even if we merged into a single fucking person, neither of us really believe that Sophia’s men would keep following her if she married the enemy. Retsos’ plan has been flawed from the start. He doesn’t know his own people.

Sophia does, though. That’s why I’m prodding her, trying to find a way to end this madness before it can take the both of us down.

But her men are just as stubborn as she is. And Sophia keeps insisting they’re too smart to fall for my tricks.

Well, I have another plan up my sleeve.

Slipping my thumb into Sophia’s mouth, I let her gently bite down on my flesh before pulling away.

She sinks into the mattress as I roll over the side of the bed and stand up. My cell phone sits on the nightstand. I’m waiting for a very important call.

Ray is close to uncovering something big.

Well, big for me… and for Sophia as well.

“So, you’re telling me, if I handed you my phone right now, and gave you the freedom to call whoever you wanted, you couldn’t convince your army to stand down? Not even if they thought I had let you escape in exchange for peace?”

Sophia shuffles up onto her ass, holding the bed sheets close to her naked body. “Like I said, they would have to be given proof that I was actually free. That probably means having me in their sights again. A phone call won’t do.”

Stepping around the bed, I grab my cell phone and hold it tight in my fist.

“And if I gave you back to them, without any strings attached, do you think you could convince them to give up this terrorist shit?”

“I… I don’t know…” Sophia admits. “I didn’t think they’d ever resort to something so vile in the first place.”

“I could have guessed,” I sneer, remembering the chaos at the library.
