It’s almost infuriating.

These were Mama’s books. They shouldn’t remind me of anyone but her.

Clenching my fists, I wade through the mess and then march upstairs. I haven’t warned anybody that I’d be coming back yet. So, in order to avoid a gunfight with my own men, I text the two soldiers I have keeping watch out front.

I’m back. Already inside. Keep a close eye out for anything suspicious. Be extra vigilant. The Greeks are looking for trouble.

I’d give the same warning to Maeve, if only she had a cell phone.

When I realized that Roman and I were going to have to hide out for a couple of days—so as not to lead our enemies back to our sanctuaries—I texted Ray asking for Maeve’s assistance again.

You’re going to run that poor woman into the ground! He’d texted back.

I’ll make sure she gets enough out of this to retire to some tropical island, I’d responded.

She already has enough money for that. She only does this because she wants to.

Fortunately for me, Maeve had seemed to want to come look after Sophia while I was away.

I’ll forever be grateful for that. Sure, I could have ordered one of my own servants to look after my captive. But for some reason, that didn’t feel right.

Maeve is good at this. Sophia feels comfortable around her, even if she doesn’t feel comfortable in these circumstances.

Hell, who would feel comfortable as their enemies captive… especially when that enemy takes your virginity and then leaves you for two days without an explanation.

Fuck. She’s going to be pissed.

I’m already preparing for a fight as I march through the kitchen and up the stairs.

Before I can burst into Sophia’s room, though, I see Maeve coming out of it.

She gently shuts the door, making sure to lock it, then places a finger to her lips when she sees me.

“She’s sleeping,” the old maid whispers, hardly surprised that I’ve just appeared out of thin air.

“Not for long, she isn’t.”

I’ve already waited long enough, and if I don’t let out all that I’ve been bottling up inside of me for the last two days, I might burn this place down and invite the Greeks in for a fucking battle royale.

“Very well,” Maeve sighs, as we pass each other in the hallway. “I’ll get some water and fruit ready to bring up.”

“Wait for my orders,” I remind her.

I’m still not sure whether I’m going to fuck Sophia first, or force some answers out of her.

All I know is that the moment I unlock her door and step inside her room, I’m blasted by a scent that can only belong to her.

It smells like a library has sprung up in a field of dewy flowers.

I flick on the lights and watch as Sophia turns in bed.

“You…” she whispers, when her eyes open enough to spot me.

“Were you expecting someone else??”

“I don’t know…” she sighs. “Maybe someone who would save me from this nightmare …”

Just like that, a stone of guilt appears in my gut. Almost immediately, it outweighs even the frustration and the focus that I barged in here with.
