“You never actually did anything in front of him.”

“No, but I did enough. And I would have gone further in front of them if you hadn't got involved and got them out.” I’m pulling at my hair again.

I should have done something. Spoke up sooner. Moved Amber on. But I just let you get on with what we usually do. I just didn’t give it a second thought.”

“I’m not blaming you, Xan. Not blaming Gabe or even Amber. It’s all on me. I have no boundaries. I’m a selfish bastard, do what I want, when I want. I just didn’t think.”

I turn my head as the front door opens. Tim, Gabe, and Levi come through it. Gabe looks like shit. He stands, hovering at the entrance to the room, not even sure if he should come in.

“Gabe, come in man,” I wave him over.

“Marcus, I don’t know what to say.”

“I do,” shouts Tim. “Marcus, you’re a selfish fucker. How could you with your son here? You’ve lost your mind, brother.”

I stand and get face to face with Tim. “You think I don’t know that?” I’m shouting back. “Help me fix it, Tim. I can’t take it back, I can’t go back and change things. Help me fix it.”

Levi puts his hand on my shoulder. “For what it’s worth, other than my arse they never saw anything of you. Well, other than Gabe fondling you. Oh, and Gabe sucking Amber’s tits. But let’s be right, she’s been shoving them in their faces since they arrived.”

“Great recap, Levi,” Tim says. “Fucking great. If this gets out…”

“Who’s going to say anything, Tim?” asks Xander.

“Well, Amber for one. Sensational headlines. For her, not so much for Marcus and Gabe.”

“Why? We haven’t starting fucking each other. Just the women. Nothing new to report there. I’ve been outed loads for that. Besides, these days no one’s bothered what gender anyone is,” I say to them all.

“What do you need help with then, Marcus? If you’re not bothered?” Tim is pissed.

“James, Tim! James. He’s bothered. I disregarded him, I disrespected him and his friends.” I’m flapping my arms around the room at them all.

“He was probably embarrassed. No one likes to see old people fuck,” says Xander starting to laugh.

To be honest so do I. “It’d be funny if it wasn’t.”

“If you could speak to his uncles, maybe they can speak to him,” Tim says, trying to think the angles through.

“Xander already has. They seem okay,” I say with gritted teeth. “I’m sure they’ll take it in their stride. What did they say, Xander?”

“They seemed more upset that James had left and gone without telling them. Turns out he’s booked them all into one of Beverly Hills’ finest hotels. They think he’ll calm down and move on.”

“I fucking hope so. I don’t know what I’ll do if I can’t see him. Call him again, Xan, see if he answers.” Xan rings the mobile and it just rings out and then cuts off.

“He doesn’t even want a message from you,” Levi says.

“Cheer me up Levi, why don’t you.”

He grins at me. “JS Marcus.”

“Have you thought about what you’re going to say if he does answer?” Tim asks.

“I’m sorry in a thousand different ways. A promise to try and do better. What else am I supposed to say?”

“That you’ll check he’s not around before you get your dick out. You’ll consider the impact of your actions on him.” Tim has his hands on his hips, just getting warmed up. “That you’ll put his needs before your crappy ones. I mean, come on man, sex with Amber and Gabe is more important than your son? Do you really want that to be his takeaway from LA?”

“Yeah, that as well,” I say, ringing the number again.

“Don’t be flippant. You need to seriously think about what you’re doing here, Marcus. He came to see you, meet you, get to know you. He is not a mate, a band brother. He has enough of those. He came here as your son. You need to stop trying to be his friend and start being a fucking parent.” Tim takes a breath in and then asks, “What about the mother? Have you spoken to her? Can she speak to him? Surely she wants it sorted.”
