I’m a fucking dead man.”

Chapter

Twenty-Three

EVIE

The day before New Years Eve. He couldn’t even manage ten days. What the hell is wrong with him? He promised me to put James first. To remember that even though he’s an adult, he’s still so young. Promised me, promised to try. Yeah, Marcus’s get out of jail free card—Try.

I’m packing a bag to go get them back, shoving random items of clothing in at top speed. My case looks like a car crash. A bit like Marcus’s face when I get a hold of him. I’ve haven’t felt so prone to violence in years. He’s turning me into The Terminator. Jude comes into my room. “Are you packing?” I ask him, not looking up.

“No, come downstairs. We all need to talk.”

I look up at him. “I don’t think we do. Pretty obvious to me.” I carry on adding stuff to my case.

“Come down, Evie. We do.”

He leaves and I stand there. What the hell is going on? Why are they delaying? I storm down the stairs to find the brothers Greystone, including Jake—who very rarely comes for just a visit—sat at the table.

“What’s going on?” I demand. “Why aren’t you getting ready? Jonno, have you ordered the plane?”

“Sit. We need to think about this,” Jonno states.

“My son has left his dickhead dad’s due to some argument, and you’re telling me I can’t go. No, Jonno. Not working for me.”

I go to spin round when Jake says, “Sit, Evie. We need to consider every angle.”

“Would you wait? If it were Sofia, your daughter? Or would you be charging in to get her out?” He bows his head. He knows he would.

“But,” Jude interjects, “James is eighteen and can take care of himself. He’s a big boy. He hasn’t asked us to go. They’ve moved to some hotel in Beverly Hills. Have plans to do all the sights, even booked themselves on some tour or other.”

I sit down. “He’s booked a tour?”

“Apparently. And they fully intend to go to the Kasey Becker party. And fuck Marcus. His words. He's already contacted Kasey and asked him if it's ok for them to still go. Told him he’d had a fall out with his dad. The guy said fine by him,” Jackson tells me.

“He’s booked a sightseeing tour?” I say and look around bewildered. The Greystone men all look smug and are trying not to laugh.

“James is one of the most practical people I have ever met. If he wants something, he won’t let anyone stop him. Anyone. Including his ‘dickhead dad,’” Jackson says.

“Do you know what the row was about?” I look at Jonno.

“James hasn’t said,” pipes up Jackson again.

I look at Jonno and maintain eye contact. “But he knows.” I point at him.

“Xander rang,” is all he says.

“Well, we’ll only have the Marcus Russell PR’d down version then,” I say in disgust.

“No, Xander was pretty candid. Kellen is totally poleaxed. It was a bloodbath, and none of the blood was James’s.”

“Well it must have been, ‘cos the kid wouldn’t leave unless it was bad. He’s no shrinking violet,” I retort. They all look at one another.

Jude gets up, touching my shoulder. “I’ll get the tea.”
