“Well they must have sold for a pretty penny. There’s thousands of acres, with the farm alone.”

“Maybe I need to find the Greystone family. They may know what happened to their friend. It was a good year after she left before they all moved, but they never mentioned her. Set someone on it, Mick. I’ll dump Giles’s mate. He’s a fucking tosser anyway.”

A childhood friend, a teenage lover, should not be so difficult to find in this day and age. It’s as if someone has removed all traces of her from every corner of the internet. And I had already fucking looked in most of them before I even hired a “professional” to dig even deeper.

I take a large gulp of whiskey as my phone starts up again

“Where you at?” Xan shouts down the phone. I can hear the music thumping out in the background. “Kenny’s here with Will.”

Both guys work for our label and were keen to get some face time with me and Xan whilst we’re in London. We haven’t been back to the UK for some time, and, to be honest, I don’t really intend to be here longer than it takes to sort out the latest drama in my family. Guess cornering us at the club is one way for them to get their time in.

“On my way!”

“Fucker, you’ve not even set off yet? It’s after 10 p.m. They’re about to start.” There’s no missing the frustration in his voice.

“On my way. It’s not far, two minutes tops.” I hang up. “Mick, fuck, we gotta’ go man,” his concentration still on the paperwork. He lifts his head out of the file.

“Where to? Do we need the car?” he queries, his attention switching immediately.

“Naw, it’s just a few streets away, I think. The Green Dragon.”

Mick looks at me, nose and forehead scrunching up in confusion,“Are you sure? I thought it was the Green Man. He starts to pull out his phone.

“Dragon, definitely, we played there ourselves back in the day. Let’s go before he has a heart attack.”

I walk past him and head out into the night air. Raining as usual, London in December. I pull my leather jacket closer to me, wishing I’d added a jumper tonight instead of a t-shirt. Fucking London rain, at least my feet are dry. I swapped my sliders for my oldest but comfiest Blundstone boots.

My beanie starts to sag before Mick catches up to me with an umbrella. I look at him. “Really?”

He just grins. “London, baby,” he laughs, “blending in.”

This is not fucking country rock. What the fuck is Xan talking about? I look around the bar but stay in the shadows. The last thing I need is to be recognised before I can find the boys. The place is raging, the band on stage killing it. Young guys, good looking, whip the crowd up into a frenzy, and by the looks of it, girls out of their minds. The lead singer is doing call and response dances around, all over the stage.

I smile as I watch them, the pure joy of being on stage there for all to see. Energy coming off them all in waves keeps you captivated. The audience is sweating along with the four men, or should I say lads, on stage. I look around for Xan, Kenny, and Will, who are nowhere to be seen. They won’t hear a call, so I text Xan.

Me
